Lauren Laverne – On air this Thursday with Daft Punk

UK fans will be treated to another radio interview this Friday on Lauren Laverne’s morning show, on BBC Radio 6 Music. From the BBC website:

“Lauren speaks to Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo about Daft Punk’s new album Random Access Memories. Working with what they call the “Principles, not the teachers” of electronic dance music and disco; Gorgio Moroder and Chic’s Nile Rogers to name a few. The first single from the album Get Lucky featuring Pharrell Williams was their first number 1 hit, One More Time reached number 2 in 2000.”

Zane Lowe

UK’s BBC Radio DJ, Zane Lowe will have a Daft Punk special tomorrow night (Monday 12th May). It will feature an in-depth interview with Daft Punk and tracks from their new album. You can listen to Zane Lowe’s show on BBC Radio 1 at 7 P.M. (BST). You can listen in, live, here.

This will probably kick off a Daft Punk filled week as the global release party in Wee Waa on the 17^th and the release of Random Access Memories fast approaches.

Last night Daft Punk took part in their first radio interview in nearly 6 years on BBC Radio 1. Their absence was Pete Tong’s leading question for the duo. Thomas, who, like usual, was the more talkative of the two, cites the 2006/2007 tour, the Tron soundtrack and “taking the time to reinvent ourselves and see where we can go next” as reasons for such a long hiatus between studio albums.

The “experimental” and “ambitious” process of Random Access Memories began in 2008 with demos, Thomas states. Having heard the album Pete Tong remarks that “it was like [they] got make the record [they] always wanted to make.” Daft Punk’s original process of working at home to make music changed to the studio with live instrumentation, resulting in their “first real studio album,” as Thomas puts it, Random Access Memories—the kind of album they have always strived to make.

Guy breaks his silence to talk about the Pharrell’s work on ‘Get Lucky,’ saying he brought his own brand of ‘liquor’ to the studio and the lyrics of the song were sung “spontaneously.” “[Pharrell] channeled the best soul and R&B… his voice sounded very different to me… it was like it was meant to be,” Guy-Man added.

Thomas goes on to talk about their work with Giorgio Moroder, how Julian Casablanca’s music and Daft Punk’s music influenced each other, working with friends DJ Falcon and Todd Edwards again.

No Tour Planned

But the question Pete Tong, and nearly everyone on the planet wants to know the answer to is are they are going to tour again? Thomas says there are “no plans right now” because they want to focus on the album first.

A similar question is asked in another interview conduced on Australian radio station Triple J, and a similar answer is given. Thomas states “Australia really understands our music,” which is one of the reasons for the worldwide album premiere in Wee Waa, and also the fact that the album “is for anyone and anywhere.” Thomas also talks about the celebratory elements of ‘Get Lucky,’ and how including Nile Rodgers and Pharrell in the song “connect all these eras together to create music of the present and possibly the music of the future as well.”

Concluding the BBC Interview, Thomas stated there are no plans to make music videos for the album and “Daft Punk remixing Daft Punk” as something in store for future projects.

In a brutally honest fashion Paul Williams talks about his involvement in Random Access Memories, in the latest collaborators video. He thanks Daft Punk for allowing him to contribute some very raw and personal lyrics to the album, and describes it as a “wonderful gift”.

He also explains the adoration he has for the band and their ability to disconnect who they are in order to allow the listener to fully experience the music they create – without the hunger for fame.

DJ Falcon is the latest to discuss his work with Daft Punk in the Collaborators series. In this episode DJ Falcon talks about how he met the duo at a party organized by Busy P in the 90s, and their subsequent work, along with other French artists, that brought French Touch to the forefront of the dance music world.

Falcon contributed to the closing track of Random Access Memories, ‘Contact.’ In it is a sample of The Sherbs song ‘We Ride Tonight,’ a track that was used during Thomas and Falcon’s Together days. Another sample was used in ‘Contact,’ which is audio of NASAs last mission to the moon.

Viewers are in for a surprise because never before released footage of Daft Punk performing during the Homework era can be seen, sans helmets. In addition to that is a new picture of the duo in their encore performance garb during their Lollapalooza set for the Alive 2007 tour, courtesy of DJ Falcon. A snippet of Paul Williams is seen in the video, along with the other collaborators, hinting towards his episode. It is possible that two episodes are left in the Collaborators series, Paul Williams and Julian Casablancas, before the release of Random Access Memories.
