View Full Version : Signatures

Is there any rules about signatures? There really should be. Some people's signatures are 6 or 7 times longer than their posts, and contain huuuuge pictures or text blocks, or long sets of quotes. Frankly, this pisses me off. A signature should not be that much larger than the post content.
Now on other forums i belong to, image signatures have to be less than blah by blah pixels. On another, pictures are against the rules, and you can only have 6 lines of text. i think this forum needs a rule like that. Maybe not so strict, but it gets really annoying reading long pages of posts that are mostly signature and no info.

The current rule we have on signatures is that they must not be larger than 600X600 pixels in terms of image size.

Hmmm... I think that's way too big, but I guess that's gonna change anything.
Is there any room for change in this policy? not to point fingers, but Upset_Clown's sig is about 7 inches tall on my screen res. settings. You should be able to see more than one post at a time.

Dark... when you say soemthing in real life, for example,"Yeah, i really liked it. The dialog is cheesy, but the story is still good." do you then go and unzip your jacket, wave around your teeshirt with a huge LOLcat macro on it, and then quote a bunch of songs? No. Posting on a forum is like talking in real life. Treat it as a social situation, not a playground that's exclusively yours.

On another, pictures are against the rules, and you can only have 6 lines of text.
On The Sims 2 forums, from what I can remember a few months ago is that the signatures cannot have images and can only be three lines of text, including the codes. Like the (color=#000000) (/color)

On the internet, though anything is possible basically.
You can talk to people and be what you want to be and still remain anonymous. Just because you "post a picture of yourself" does not always mean that is what you look like in real life. You could've just googled a picture and posted it on here.
Same way with behavior.

Some of us like to live outside the box. Don't force us to follow your way of life. :P
Aw, leave Boba alone, people. He's not complaining, just expressing his opinion.
A little more respect wouldn't hurt, hm ~
Actually, I'm on his side on some points.
First I'd like to say : I believe that most of the signatures on this forum are perfectly fine, I'm not complaining. The thing is that you have to be careful not to go overboard. Your oversized sig may look really neat and they may help you express yourself and personalize your posts and whatnot (isn't it what avatars are for, personalizing posts, in the first place ? ), but I must admit, for example, that I've often had trouble reading upset_clown's post at first glance because what he writes is so squished by his sig it makes it hard to read ( no offence, hun. ) Displaying quotes in your sig is a good idea, but simply droping the quote boxes would make the whole thing clearer. If you really want to post a picture that's originally huge, resize it, maybe. Same thing with text. Not only it would make the forum prettier and cleaner, but it would improve readability.
HOWEVER.
I disaprove how you're defending your point, Boba.
With a pretty much agressive/close-minded tone, that is.
Affronting people ("Real mature; that's the way to do it, Dark.") and imposing your way of seeing things ("Treat it as a social situation") is not the best way to do it, in my opinion.
Anyway, that's what I perceived in your posts. -shrugs-
Also I'm highly against your last statement, but that's another story.
There's always a way that will make everyone happy. It's called a compromise. C:
Just my 2 cents.

*points to Gase* what she said. It is possible to go over board, just don't shove it in our face like we're not important or something. I just didn't like that it sounded like Boba was wanting to tell everyone what they can and can't have in their sig.

large signatures dont bother me personally, but if its getting to you so much boba, ask the person in question nicely to change their sig rather than starting a campaign against it.theyre more likely to cooperate if youre not being forceful.in any case,i dont think we mods are here to govern things like this, its the persons choice.we have a set limit for signature sizes.

i for one, agree that some of the signatures are just a little too big, but personally, i dont really mind them.
a signature is a great way to express your personality. it doesnt matter whether you would do that/show that in real life, because this isnt real life and anyone can do anything they want online.
i dont like the 'a signature should be smaller than the post content' idea, mainly because if someone types one line of text they couldnt even HAVE a sig!
a few things to consider however:
its very hard to read and confusing when you have a BUNCH of text in the signature, because its hard to distinguish from the actual post.
its also a bit annoying when theres more than one big picture in a signature. its not necessarily a bad thing, but it can get large and it means you have to scroll down more to read further posts.
a second thought: anyone have a problem with my signature's size? i cant really make it any smaller because then it would be hard to read the words, but i could always change it....

Yup, i have - You already have an avatar picture to post there some of your images.
why do You need to have a picture in a signature too? i mean, the whole text from the signature can be written in a standard script like here in the post, and there is no need to add a funny picture to it just to make it all bigger and....cooler (???)
ps: I think that a great book/or CD/ doesn't need a great cover too - as it is with people,

Well I mean, I could put Teletubbies in your sig. A general idea will be good enough xD Do you want Daft Punk, or you, or...?

hmmm. Def. DP in there. No Teletubbies lol. Maybe you could do Guy-man and Eric Chedeville. with the Crydamoure symbol in the middle. Black and red are pry my favorite colors. Can you please take this discussion elsewhere? It has been made obvious that I'm some sort of jerk for wanting to get straight to the meat of a post without visual disctractions, and the thread has outlived it's purpose.
besides that, i have 25 new emails, all of them reminders about this thread because I forgot to uncheck the box, and having superfluous emails drives me nuts. So maybe a signature making thread should be made in The Lounge to carry on the discussion.

In my opinion, signatures are like the way that a member's profile extends into each and every one of his posts. They should be creative, colorful, and reflective of the person who made them, not 8-page stories. Feel free to be unique, but if you have something that just has to be seen but is bigger than your average post size, link it. Links work just as well.

german and english are both well... germanic languages are are based off of nordic ones. http://retiredbarrister.blogspot.com/2007/10/language-evolutionary-tree.html

They share some vocabulary, but that's it (most of the languages from that area share words anyway). Trivia: Cabaret was a German word before it was adopted by the French.
At this point, i don't care too much about the OTness, because languages fascinate me. Especially German.

I also enjoy order, but I also like a little bit of chaos every now and then, just to live on the edge :)
And also, in response to you, no, german is not at all like French. I havebeen learning both of them for just over two years, and I can tell you that they are not at all similar. Spanish is quite similar to French though.
French is love and care. German is tidy and hard. Its like having sex with a washing machine.

Quote the post you want to add to your sig (via clicking the "Quote" icon), copy the entire quote code (e.g. [quote[[/quote] + the post), and paste it onto the signature field in your profile.

Try uploading the pic on www.tinypic.com and copy paste the link that pops up with the [img] code intact onto the "signature" field.
