So I looked through all of the Releases pages and didn't
find a thread on the Homework album. So just tell
me about your favorite songs and what you like
about it.

I remember seeing a Homework thread sometime last year but I can't seem to find it either. I can't stand the crummy search engine we have so I'll let someone else look for it.

Personally, I think Homework is a bit overrated. Definitely NOT better than Discovery. Not as much substance, and very unpolished. Some tracks are absolutely HORRIBLE and practically not worth listening to (Oh Yeah, Rollin' and Scratchin', Burnin' (except for that bassline), Rock N' Roll), and others are FANTASTIC (Around the World, Fresh, Da Funk, Daftendirekt/WDPK 83.7, Revolution 909) and then the remaining few fall into middle ground (Teachers, Phoenix, Alive). And Funk Ad is a waste of space.

It's weird how Homework goes from the first seven tracks being really good, to the rest of the album being really mediocre/bad in comparison. This album has some of the BEST house tracks ever, and then some **** that isn't even listenable to.

Also, the lack of Musique on Homework severely disappoints me, as that song is great. Couldn't they have put that on there instead of say, Rock N' Roll, Oh Yeah, or Rollin' and Scratchin'? I know Da Funk sold better than Homework which is why they didn't include, but it's a shame it wasn't released on Homework really, as B-Sides fade into obscurity very fast.

Personally, my favorite track is Da Funk/Daftendirekt/WDPK 83.7, then Fresh, then Around the World. I really like all three songs though.

Da Funk. Just crazy and epic for me. (I'm not saying I don't like the others)

I say that all songs are good, but is very raw sounding and DP even said that it was something that they pretty much made in their room. It was to show that anyone could make something like that. (ps i think around the world's the best)

Burnin' is my favourite!

OK, maybe I was a bit harsh on Burnin'. I love the bassline on Burnin', but all the other crap in the song, namely that little sound in the beginning, the lower DJ scratching, and the fire alarms, really just get on my nerves.

Rollin' and Scratchin', no. As far as I'm concerned, that song is just plain noise. I can't stand it personally.

However, I absolutely LOVED Burnin' the song when it was mixed in Alive 2007, with the Voyager guitar twang and everything but the DJ scratching and that one good sound effect that sort of builds up and mixes with the key of the Voyager guitar twang are hardly audible. That mix was so fantastic, I can't get enough of it.

The original song though just has too much crap in it to be a truly good song.

WHHHATTTT!!!!????
Are you insane?! Homework was what got all(?) of Europe to fall in love with DP. If anything, Discovery was just a good follow-up that unfortunately got picked up by the noob pop artists here in the U.S. Discovery is good, yes. DP's House/Dance beats are much more exciting than what many consider their "kiddy" album. Even DP said that Discovery was a different sound. They were trying to re-capture childhood.
I can't believe that you don't like R&S. Ugh! I have chills going up and down my spine now.
Whenever someone asks me if I can give them some good DP, I give them Homework. Discovery got a bad rap here in the U.S. for two reasons:
1. It came out in the early 2k's. This was when all of a sudden, pop was HUGE. weak...
2. Kanye West likes little boys... just sayin'.
So because of those 2 reasons, people only ever know 2 songs from Discovery; OMT (their 1-hit wonder) and HBFS (Kanye and little boys).
I fart in your general direction, Baloo. Lol.

I think discovery was, and still is a great album, but i have to agree with ION here,. discovery came out at the worst time possible, when pop was all the rage. Its because of that the album will never be fully appreciated for what its worth in the US.
Homework, personally, is the best album out of the three, because it has that edgey chicago/French House sound unique to most house albums out there. Its got its kind of own flair to it, proudly saying f*** you to those who hate it. Its what got DP out there in France and what made them huge. I think all the tracks are perfect, even the intro (WDPK) and the Outro (Funk Ad), which couldnt be said for HAA (On/off=WTF) SOme of the songs can get a bit...."noisy" but thats what makes these tracks so different from discovery and, arguably, even HAA. The insanity of R&S and Rock and Roll bring the tracks to life. I could say more about this but i think i've done enough lol.

Rollin' and Scratchin' = best song on Homework for me.

I don't understand how Funk Ad could be considered a waste of space by anyone.....wow! Look at how much space it's wasting! A whole 51 seconds! Damn, they could have fit SEVEN more songs into that space....ya. I don't think so. Not to mention the fact that Funk Ad is actually even better than Da Funk (well, almost....if it was longer).

I'm not saying you can't like a song, hell, High Fidelity doesn't do much for me, but it's just not my thing is all. I'm not going to call it overrated **** and say it shouldn't exist, because that's just wrong man.

When the hell did I say the song shouldn't exist? I never said that. I just would have liked to have seen something else in place of that, that's all. Not "Oh my gosh this song is so terrible it's the spawn of evil BLARRRAGAGHHG"

Really, I'm just voicing my opinion on Homework. Don't get me wrong, Homework is a great album. And I'm not bashing people for liking it. But I don't think as a whole it's as super-fantastic as some put it out to be. But that's just my opinion really, and I know there will be people that will disagree with me. And that's perfectly fine really.

I must say that, out of all of DP's albums, homework is still my all time favourite after all these years.

Each track is unique (as on each of their albums), but you can so tell that they love what they made. I mean, look at musique v1? 6 tracks from homework and three from each of the others? If that aint love for their roots I dont know what is!

My personal feelings on each track are as follows:

Daftendirekt - Great introduction, ripped off a live set. It is genious, for using parts of Da Funk also, linking them together. And you gotta love the vox!

WDPK 83.7 FM - This should have been LONGER. As much as this is an excellent intro for revolution 909, I still recon here they should have gone the whole hog and put "Musique" here. Also, you ca still tell the links at the beginning of the album to "Da Funk".

Revolution 909 - What can I say? This track is full of Emotion (sorry, HAA). It is biblically good in my opinion, even the streets intro. The main parts of the song are just amazing and beautifully composed (especially at 1:25 onward... <3). One of my personal favourites.

Da Funk - Classic house, great funk sounds. Perhaps not my favourite track on homework, but still brilliant none the less. The middle of the track has possibly the coolest riff ever!

Phoenix - Used to be my favourite track on here. But it does have a very basic nature to it. Very progressive, clever use if instruments, and indeed very gospel-esque.

Fresh - Very relaxing, i'd go as far to say its slightly ambient, while not at the same time. The opening waves sets the scene, and I feel it is very crydamoure ish. Another Favourite.

Around The World - Only three words sum this up, and they are in the title. Seriously, this is a classic example of DP and probably their best known song. This MAKES homework imo. Funky bassline, guitars, and the vocals!

Rollin' & Scratchin' - Now we move onto the more "Controversal" side of homework. Which, oddly, is IMO even better! R&S still ranks as one of my all time favs, since it is the first track I heard from homework.
It is extremely progressive, and has many ingenious sounds. The screeching and bass make this one sound more primitive, but I get this song. It is called rollin' & scratchin' after alll. The sounds and name suit it massively. :D

Teachers - Sorry, but this is the track on here I listen to the least. Not because I dont like it, just it's the least memorable for me. I like the fact it is "thanking" and referencing their influences. I can't help notice that I'm not on there though :P

High Fidelity - Personal favourite on the whole album <3. Love the samples, the instruments, and how the whole package goes together. Extremely memorable and special to me at last. And generations will have headaches trying to decipher what that vocal appears to be saying. "Open Up The..."

Rock N' Roll - Unusual name in my opinion, as it doesnt match the song. Though it is basically a companion to Rollin & Scratchin, it still manages to sound different. Of the two, this one is the most simple. Still brilliant mind. Another Favourite.

Oh Yeah - This has a bit of dubstep to it i recon. Vocals make this one funky. And the deliberate overdrive of the instuments. Almost like a little break.

Burnin' - Despite the simmilarities to junior jack (who may have influenced them/ been influenced by this) this is a wholly unique song. I personalyl love the screechyness at the beginning, and everybody loves the bassline.

Indo Silver Club - Epic. Great use of a sample, good builds and overall an ability to take you in and make you listen. Luckily, it isnt as dark as ISC part one (which is epic still, and sounds like a gangster song to me), but it is memorable.

Alive - Their oldest track on the album. The final mix of the new wave deserved its place here. Still very dark, but as with most of homework, mixes very well into the final half (and on alive 07)

Funk Ad - It's just an addition, still goes well to outro the album. it's Like a reference to the beginning of the album, referenceing Da Funk once more. If anything, it sounds slightly better than the oriinal.

These are just my opinions, but i still think overall this is the album they worked hardest on, and was the best recieved.

Homework is personally my least favourite Daft album but one of my all time favourite albums (shows how highly I rate my Daft Punk albums). Tracks like Burnin, Revolution 909, Da Funk, Around The World, Fresh and Phoenix are absolutey brillaint. But I agree with what some people have said about certain tracks on the album maybe aren't so good in comparison with the rest of the album. Songs like Teachers I just don't really see the point of and thats why I don't rate it as highly as the other Daft Punk albums. Still a brilliant album and a benchmark for house music that has really changed the genre and the scene for the better.

Daftendirekt and Alive are my most favorite songs off of Homework. They both sound so raw.
