View Full Version : The possibility of Daft Punk disbanding

I've been thinking about it and I think that DP might disband in the near future. Here is my evidence:
-In past public appearances, only Thomas is present, if at all.
-In the dazed interview, THOMAS said that electronic music wasn't as exciting to him as before. What about Guy, what does he think? Does he still want to create electro? If you take out the soul of the group (technology, robots, electro/house/techno) then the group is at risk of, you know, fading away.
-We all know that Guy has a particular sound (funky, disco, happy, upbeat, melodic), and so does Thomas (robotic, metallic, moody, rhythmical). Knowing this, it's easy to assume that both played a big and equal part in creating "Homework" (For example: Around The World- Guy, Rolling N Scratching- Thomas). Then, we can say that Guy was mostly in charge of discovery because it's super funky, warm and organic sounding. Finally, HAA sounds like Thomas mostly made it by himself as it's harsh, NOT funky at all, and robotic. Now we get to TRON. The few electronic pieces in the soundtrack (end credits, end of line, solar sailer, etc) sound almost like HAA; cold, metallic, etc. Where was Guy's imput?
What do you guys think?

I don't see it happening to be honest with you, thomas has always been the one to really talk in interviews so that is nothing different and their music is just evolving so I don't think thomas is taking over in that sense.

This made me emo, I just hate thinking about it! T__T
But I don't think they would... soon. Lots of artists say they don't like what they're doing anymore but they still do it for the people and guy once said that they don't care about fame, it's always about the people enjoying the music, so... Nah. And about Thomas, well it seems like that because he's the one that talk in interviews and is outgoing unlike guy. I guess.

Well I can understand what you're saying, but I've read that Guy-Man is the guy who is critical about everything they do. So that would mean that even if Thomas makes all the tracks, they would all have to go through Guy-Man, who either completely shuts it down or puts his input into it. I don't know how the process works, but to them it doesn't matter who does what, because they seem to care more about the final product more than the process. That's probably why they never comment on who did what in every single track.
There's even a quote from an interview: "He's much more of the tech guy than I am. We did everything together. But I have more distance." He added, "I'm more critical of everything we do. We're two halves of one solid combination. There's balance there — completeness between us, yeah."
They've been working together for what, 25+ years. They know each other inside and out, especially about their music tastes. I know this sounds lame, but I wouldn't think that after that many years of working together they would disband and move on their own ways.

well its happened before. with lots of many famous bands too. but i see what you're saying and i agree with you. they've addressed that rumor in previous interviews, actually. and they said that they didn't see any possibility of the two splitting.

if they ever did disband, they'd prolly just work on other projects like they've already done in the past (Roule, Crydajam, etc.)
i'd rather they broke up than carry on if their hearts weren't into it. or even worse:try to be DP with some replacement member DX it's happened with Interpol and NO THANK YOU~

They can feel free to break up once I'm dead and gone about a 90 years from now. T^T
(That is kind of impossible anyway...) Unless of course they outlast me, then no, or if I...
Well, I don't want that to happen, at any rate. I will cry. Something tells me they aren't really keen on the possibility, either.

Daft Punk disbanding because Thomas is the only one that speaks in interviews? What the hell. Thomas is usually the more extroverted one out of the duo and usually speaks when it comes to interviews. I thought everyone knew this.

:wow: >.> i hate reading posts like this. The thought of dp disbanding has never even begun of crossing my mind. I don't want it too happen, none of us do. Discovery has some electronic feel too it, such as HBFS or aerodynamic. And HAA has some funky-ness too it as well. Make love. But It could happen, but in the far far far future. As we know thomas has kids. I'm not too sure about guy-manuel but, i know that some time in the FAR future there're gonna want too settle down.
So no, not any time soon. Daft Punk will live for a long long long time. :happy2:

Hah, of course they will outlast us, they are immortal robots :D :p
Well, I certainly, like many other DP fans, don't ever want them to break up too. If they were to, then I think they'd go out with a bang. Like, I think that they'd make one, final album that would be better than the last 3 combined. It just wouldn't sound right if they were to be in the music industry for so long, gain so many fans and critical acclaim, and then fade slowly and dimly into the background and let down their fans.

Some reasons why this CANT happen:
1. I will cry
2. My parents will laugh at me for crying
3. They are just to awesome to do that to us :(
4. Uh, well you guys just made an AWESOME new site!
5. I will cry
6. I will cry more.
T_T sadness, but it will NOT happen. As long as we keep positive...?

I'm sorry I scarred so many people with my insights....
It's just that sometimes I don't know if they're sleeping or dead due to their secrecy and general inactivity...

'general inactivity'?!!?! um, there's this little thing called TRON LEGACY that they've been working on ;)
as far as 'secrecy' goes, well, that's kinda their THING. ya know. what with the masks and the Guyman wanting to be able to walk down the street w/o being raeped by fantards and all.

I said general inactivity, as in they don't do that much stuff in general. I mean a new release every 5 years?

so your idea of 'activity' = album releases? not being a smartass--just trying to understand where you're coming from. b/c to me, it seems like they've been crazy busy for the past five years: HAA album + videos, Alive 2007 tour & album, Tron soundtrack (which, if the article i read was true, they started like 1-2 years ago)
oh, and then there was the Grammys w/Kanye and the popping up onstage w/Phoenix...

I see them touring for 2011/2012 as their last tour realistically, I'm counting on them releasing a new studio album between now and the tour next year for some new material but as much as it sucks to say, they probably won't be around for much longer. They have families and their getting into their late 30's.... they've made a lot of good music and been an inspiration to many different acts over the years but I think they'll be calling it a wrap in the near future. I can see Thomas and Guy maybe working with other producers and musicians after that on other work here and there but personally I think their next studio album will be their last (at the rate that they create new albums anyways) unless they decide all of a sudden to start making a new album every year but it hasn't happened before so I don't see that changing (N)

"I mean a new release every 5 years?"
It's not about the "secrecy and general inactivity". You're talking about Daft Punk, "Electronic dance music" is hard to make whether it's House, Trance or Techno and of course they won't release an album or a single unless it's perfect!

First of all, great topic. It's nice to read others oppinions.
This is my theorie: they will never disband, only quit TOGETHER.
Something in the future will happen, as it happend on 9/9/99. Only now, the robots have finished their 'goal' (and in other words, Guy-man and Thomas wanna live with their familly/grow old etc. etc.) and once again, thei will appear as 'Humans', presenting their final album...
This always has been a vision of mine, they became robots, only to reappear as humans.

Well, as many of you have said, they wont be around forever(EXTREME SADFACE), they want to spend time with there families and such things, well i'm thinking they will be passing the Daft Punk torch on to two worthy candidates, and with this torch will be there legacy, and then when they grow old and have families they shall pass it on and so fourth...

I feel like I'm having Deja Vu lol.
I don't see them splitting any time soon tbh, I mean, they've mentioned before they still want to work on other things such as films and new albums. Plus, the assumtion that they would split because they want to do other things seperatly is silly... Since they already both have a number of side projects each...

ditto
as to the inactivity, they're known as perfectionists. they will release new music when they're ready. plus, they're french. don't compare daft punk to other musicians. whatever deal daft punk has with their record company, it seems that they are not being forced to churn out albums after albums.
