no, this isn't a thread about Homework lolz

today i got my most recent portfolio back. (or at least the part that's pertinent here.)

this is how i spent all of Tuesday night, and most of the day Wednesday:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v135/thebox24/art/alive-th.jpg
6in x 6in acrylic painting for my color theory class.
(you could argue it's monochromatic since all of those tones come from modulations of one single hue.)

i'm a little unsatisfied with it, but that's mostly nagging perfectionism... ^^;; it's also got some color alterations because of scanning, but i couldn't fix it... the original's a little warmer.

also, earlier this semester i had to do some photofilterin' and stuff for another class, so if you wanna see that, too, go for it. (i figured they're rather uninteresting, so if you want to see one in particular, lemme know and i can up a fairly hi~res version.)

that acrylic painting is amazing. how much? or are you selling prints? :)

ha. i'm flattered. XD

the original definitely wouldn't be for sale. (i'm just that way.)

and i'd have to way re~work it before i even thought of selling prints... plus i've never sold art before... ^^;;;

but thanks!

DaftSnow
23rd Oct 2007, 07:03
Yeah my dad won't ever sell any of his paintings either, he's just like that. So we just have closets full, lol. But yeah that's seriously a really cool painting, I'd put it up on my wall. Good job.

I hope it is perfectionism cos it is really good. I too would definitely buy that if it were on sale.

I quite like those filtered images, it's simple but it works.. If you have time to up just one, I wouldn't mind the completely orange one.
Thanks piroteki!

Now do you believe me piro? I told you the painting's amazing! (For those wondering what I'm talking about, I was shown the painting a few days ago and was shocked with amazement).

*Applause* Once again I say, fantastic work, and thanks for sharing with us this brilliant tribute to the Robotic Duo, I'm sure they'd be honored. :)

okay, guys, so i am pretty much a n00b for delayed reply, but i am putting off homework (of the non~daft kind, unfortunately), so what am i going to do?

ANYTHING ELSE I CAN POSSIBLY THINK OF! (in this case, replying to my thread, whoo! XD)

thanks for the great response everyone, i really appreciate it! <3

here's a link to a bigger version of the "feather filter" as it's been dubbed:
"the feather filter" / fire in the pyramid

and another, because i felt like it:

You should take your pumpkin, dip it in Gold. Then let it harden and let the organic material rot, and have a gold plated hollow daft punk pumpkin forever.

lol, but gold isn't translucent, and you wouldn't be able to see it light up!

the lines making the suits aren't actually holes, they're just carved in enough to let light go through. it would be impossible otherwise. the logo actually is holes, but a lot of them don't go all the way through because it's lame. lol

DaftSnow
1st Nov 2007, 01:55
Yeah, i was realizing that some parts of the robots would be impossible to fully cut out cuz the peice would just fall out. So i assumed you carved out just enough to let the light run through, and you really nailed it.

lol. i just got it back from my friends' place. startin' to look a little funky there. XD

(those grey pieces in the logo are actually pieces of paper i forgot to pick out and not mold, i think...)

Hehe yeah, you should totally do something with these images, like put them on shirts or other clothing items. I'd totally wear them! What class is this portfolio for?

piroteki
15th Nov 2007, 04:34
it's "Color Theory and Composition"

you really thing those are t~shirt worthy? ^^;; i would think the whole square design thing is kinda lame...

i have a woodblock print i've been wanting to put on a shirt since i made it last semester, and i actually got around to it with a screenprinting project this year. though i think i'm still going to have to redo the shirt sometime... kinda sloppy...

Aero5555

dunno how well the print is gonna come out, though, i first of all, forgot to flip it, and second of all, the transfer was kinda crappy, so... it's going to take a lot of work.

but whatev.

and because less people commented on it/noticed than i was expecting... the other reference is a nod to the piece of artwork that supposedly inspired the video: M. C. Escher's "Encounter."

That is ridiculously good. It's not even funny anymore, before it was "here's some random sketches" now it's like "here's what you'll never be able to afford in auction in 10 years time when it's worth millions".
You're so good.

21st Nov 2007, 21:22
come on, melkoret, don't post if you haven't read the thread. i don't want to hear your opinion if you haven't looked at the piece of art...

anyway... no it's not going to be colored in. if you knew anything about the etching (or just printmaking in general) process you'd know it would be a huge pain in the ass to do that. even regardless of that point, though, the original Escher piece is black and white, and the point of mine is to emulate his work, and in many ways it still actually is his piece, so no color in the original, no color in mine.

Hrm. Sorry i didnt have time to properly research etching Piro. It was just a question. also, and there are multiple ways you could color it.. perhaps digitally enhancing the scan(maybe a better scan ^^) If you wanted, I unno I just think it would be cool personally as like an alternate version as homage to the DP video.

=/ Sorry maybe ill just stay away though?

piroteki
22nd Nov 2007, 20:04
this design isn't the finished project by far, so i think i'm just going to leave it as is. what i was saying about the etching/printmaking is that pretty much, if you want it to be colored, then you have to make multiple plates/blocks, and yeah...

i've done it a few times in the past, so not only would it involve cutting/etching/otherwise making separate plates for each color involved, but i also have to not screw up my registration so the different layers match up, which actually is a lot harder than it sounds. especially when you have ink on your plates/blocks.

but i think i like this better in black and white... dunno why but i just don't like the idea of color for this...

Aero5555
22nd Nov 2007, 21:12
Agreed, keeping it black and white makes it look more "attached" to the source material, M.C. Escher's work that is.

piroteki
24th Nov 2007, 07:56
this is by no means new work, but i was staring at this little guy sitting on my desk, and i thought i'd share.

doesn't have an official name or anything, but i typically refer to him (as evidence in the filename) as "television rules the nation guy."

i had someone tell me last year he thought it/he was creepy, but i never thought so; is he?

medium, if anyone cares, is wire (copper, and uh... not copper), foam core, and masking tape.

today i got my most recent portfolio back. (or at least the part that's pertinent here.)

Thats just plain kick-ass. :)

I love it, every little bit, the paint makes it kinda blurry, but I love that. Its amazing.

10/10 I would definitely pay for a print of this as well! :)

melkoret
25th Nov 2007, 19:11
I really like that wire sculpture ^_^

without the backdrop thingy it wouldnt be the same though. Its like the simplicity of the wireframe figure with the artistically inclined mounting just makes that perfect balance that shows it off. i only wish you could more clearly see the accents and outline of the figure more easilly. Like straighter wires (thicker?). anyways thats my comments on it.

Now n the first painting you showed (seen above in the qoute) "Together", you painted that entirely by hand?

piroteki
26th Nov 2007, 05:21
it's probably the fact that this isn't the best picture, looks a little less confusing irl... i blame the flash, i think...

and yeah, straighter wires would help i suppose, they're just not very strong, so they get bent easily.

and yeah, i painted that entirely by hand. is there any other way to do it? ^^;;

melkoret
26th Nov 2007, 07:41
oh it almost looks lik a bit of thee old "cutout" filter from photoshop heh. ;P

piroteki
26th Nov 2007, 07:45
yeah i filtered it before i put it on paper... i think it was cutout primarily, but i was experimenting a lot, so there may be some other filters in there as well.

i have done that kind of filter effect by hand a couple times before, though, and it's really a pain... hahah

R0B0T
26th Nov 2007, 18:42
Oooh~! That's amazing! You are very talented.

melkoret
26th Nov 2007, 22:34
im alittle confused on that process? you made the pic on computer then painted? or printed and painted over.. or??? lol

That sounds like a very interesting idea i may have to try.

piroteki
26th Nov 2007, 23:02
this is how it works:

picture -> filter -> printout -> transfer (carbon paper/trace with light table/graphite on back of paper/etc.) -> paint -> done!

in this case i used carbon paper to transfer the lines to the bristol paper which is what i painted on, but like i said, there are a ton of different ways of doing that.

TOCKYN
27th Nov 2007, 02:27
wow the little guy looks crepy ^^, and the red girl is awezome, i really think you could be an amazing artist.

piroteki
27th Nov 2007, 06:27
thank you TOCKYN and R0B0T~ :D

that "red girl" is actually a Japanese rocker. her name's AYA.

Aero5555
27th Nov 2007, 12:38
Did you draw AYA there or is the pic just filtered and colored-in or something? Cool pic.

piroteki
28th Nov 2007, 00:37
the painting that has AYA in it is actually on canvasboard, in case you couldn't tell, so no it wasn't filtered and colored in. lol (in other words, it's traditional and not digital)

i used a picture (actually a still from a PV) of AYA then did the "filtering" myself by hand with my lightbox. then transferred that to the canvasboard and painted it. i was going to say it took a while, but i think i did it in a day or two, so...

melkoret

for realz, on the $$$.

i bought some stuff today. for three (small) tubes of acrylic, a pad of bristol, and two fine~point Sharpies, i spent nigh $30.

nothing terribly new, but finally printed that stuff.

i'm... less than satisfied i think... but wasn't expecting much from it to begin with...

upper half: the two most decent prints
lower left: probably my best, of course because it's the test on newsprint
lower right: the actual plate [copper]

that particular print was for my art education class. most of the other stuff i've posted here was for my color theory class.

as sad as it is, i haven't really done any [serious] spare time art in a long, long, long time...

Do you have a grade for it yet?

Do you have a grade for it yet?

the print? i just turned that in today, so no.

as for the other class (color theory), i was .8 shy of an A. D: don't remember what i got on the DP painting, but i'm pretty sure it would've been an A had i turned it in on time... ^^;;;

EDIT: huh... apparently the word "theory" doesn't show up if you write it within square brackets...

o look i have a signature now! o___o

hahah. so yeah. got bored and decided to spit out some sprites.

obviously not going to post them in the thread, since they're already in my signature!

...i had no idea they'd come out looking so light against this dark background... hmm...

...Hopefully, I'm not "Necro'ing", but... whoa.
Printed out your "Encore" pic, I'm gonna put it up in my room.
Love the DP pumpkin. :)
And... well, that ATW plate is really cool.
BTW... considering this thread might have been "dead"... sowwy. :(

it is necro~ing, but because it's actually worthwhile (and it's my thread. hahah) it's okay.

piroteki portfolio WIP sequence go!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v135/thebox24/art/IMG_0539.jpg

and yeah, those two sheets of paper that are blank aren't just there to be there, they're another preliminary and composition respectively... D:

OH DOOD I love this. Is that screen printed, or cut outs, or what?
Also the picture at the start of the thread, HOLY WOW YES.
And the pumpkins, such a damn good (and well done) idea to do the encore DP!
God I love the Escher thing too XD why haven't i seen this thread before. Buh.
And then there's the ATW print, the actual used copper plate would look awesome in an old frame.

TALENT.

sorry for getting back to you so late DDD: but much appreciated!

i've only done screen printing once, and that was something completely un~Daft, so nope. i think i pretty much stated the medium on everything, but those in the picture above were acrylic paintings. the three studies/prelims to the right were painted on bristol and cut out, which is what gives the really sharp lines.

but yeah, thanks! :DD

i should be posting something soon. (i don't post everything, as i'm pretty sure that'd be kind of boring for people, but i have something nice and robot~y that i'm working on atm, sooo~ :D)
