View Full Version : Music that may die out

I think that someday, obviously, any form of music now will be replaced.
But, music that I think is not going to stand the test of time as long would probably be this:
Rap or hip hop, unless it was REALLY defining and worthy
Thrash, head banging (like really hard) rock
****ty electronica rip offs that are just like beeps and 'think' it's dance-able

Stuff that will stay:
Good electronica
Good rock/Jazz rock/Industrial rock/progressive rock like Nine inch Nails or Mars Volta
Classics, like The Beatles
Jazz - like Miles Davis or Louis Armstrong
Trance to a certain extent - people like Tiesto who are good at it

Any others and your thoughts?
spurway.

groups that create genres, rather than following a trend and jumping on the band wagon, not resting on their laurels and being original will always stand the test of time.(i pretty much described daft punk there).for instance, nirvana more or less created the grunge movement, even i who can remember that far back cant name any bands who were involved in that or are still around today.

i don't think there's any way we can predict that... popular culture is mostly what determines that, and it's pretty fickle. lol

i don't think any genre of music will totally "die out," though. after all, we still have classical music and even older musical traditions (in example of Japan, things like koto, taiko, shamisen, etc.) and way back to things like tribal drumming.

Music genres never "die out", they just become obscure and (sometimes) obsolete where the mainstream act as if it never or does not exist at all. 80's music is an example, nobody makes those kinda tunes anymore, but that doesn't mean it aint good or it suddenly went extinct, I still love it and prefer it over any new stuff these days.

And what piro said about the tribal drumming and traditional dances.. etc, it may not be popular in the mainstream, but some people in my country still find only Tribal Drumming/Khaleeji Music to be the most enjoyable to listen to, and can't stand listening to anything else. I mean, to this day, no wedding is safe from that kinda music, if you know what I mean. (By the way, I only listen to Western music, and dislike Arabic/Greek). XD

It's tradition, after all.

Rap or hip hop, unless it was REALLY defining and worthy

Have you seen how rich these hip hop guys are? How much do you think they sell?? It's a lot, in 3 of the last 6 years the top selling US album has been rap or hip-hop, but it's probably even more than we can imagine.
Neither rap nor hip-hop is anywhere close to dying out, simply because the amount of people who buy this stuff is MASSIVE.
Then of course there is the argument about how culturally significant those styles of music are, how much hip hop especially affects so much of modern popular music, beyond the global appeal..

Dude take a look at Iron Maiden. They have been going for over 30 years and are bigger than they ever were. There are plenty others too - Metallica and AC/DC also deserve a mention - these bands sell out stadiums worldwide and still shift millions of records.

That said - a band like My Chemical Romance won't be around in 30 years time, purely because they are 'trendy pap'.

As previously said, the trend setters and those who define their respective genres will be listened to forever, and that goes for all genres.

Well - yeah. Each to his own I guess - but I'm talking... YEARS DECADES down the track.

it's one of the two side projects of Tomoko Kawase, the lead singer of the brilliant green. she has another alter~ego Tommy heavenly6, who does more rock~type songs, but her Tommy february6 alter~ego is all 80~esque synth stuff.

that's 'cause most of the good stuff is underground.

check out Nujabes, if you know what's good for you.

i also really like m-flo and quite a bit of Epik High's stuff, but i guess some of both of their stuff might be a little to pop~ish for some...

(and of course, all of those artists are Japanese, excepting Epik High, who are Korean, and actually m-flo are technically part Korean, too. lol)

EDIT: oh dang, and looking through my library just now, i've come across some more.

it's not really underground stuff, but The Kleptones made a mash~up of The Flaming Lips' Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots with various rap/hip~hop songs, and it's really great. it runs the gamut from club/gangster rap to more of what we're dubbing "the good stuff" but regardless of genre, the juxtapositioning of it is what makes it cool.

others: Slum Village, Sonpub

Nujabes Slum Village

agreed, I really love slum village, and I have one nujabes album downloaded although he's not completely hip hop I have him categorized as hip hop.

check out little brother, mos def, talib kweli, outkast, naledge, jay-z, main flow & 7L, de la soul, lupe fiasco, cunninlynguists, gang starr, jurassic 5, masta ace, sage francis, rhymefest, a tribe called quest, zion i, the procussions, j-dilla, GLC, panacea, and free way.

my absolute favorites, common, pharrell (third favorite artist), N.E.R.D. (pharrell, and 2 other guys chad and shay), and kanye west (second favorite artist, guess who is number one). just get over kanye's ego and you are fine.
