in non-quoted news, i have been dorkily excited about combinations of food and science.

much of my day thus far has been dominated by truffle-making. ('cause i had to make the ganache tonight for the Japanese club meeting that we're making them at tomorrow.)

anyway, while shopping for some extra ingredients that i forgot, i got some Irish steel-cut oatmeal! so i'm going to have some oatmeal/porridge for breakfast tomorrow! yeahhh!!! not only that, but i'm gonna cook it in my rice cooker!!! yeahhhhhh!!!

also, after spending three hours making my ganache (truffle batter, essentially), it came out all grainy and gross, and i'm like "wtf?!" like it still tasted delishus, but looked... like crap... (almost literally. D: ) so then i looked up stuff on the internet, and i found out how to fix it...

WITH SCIENCE!!!!

and then i did what it said and added some water, and it was gloriously smooth and beautiful. ANNDDDD~ i can use that discovery/experience to write about for my Chemistry of Food class!!

'cause chocolate is apparently a sort of colloid/emulsion. (solid dispersed in fats) the solids (like sugar) only love water, and the fats (like cocoa butter and particles) only love oil. there's this emulsifying agent in the chocolate (lecithin) that makes them play nice with each other because it loves both water and oil.

i'm not going to go into all of the chemistry, but basically chocolate is really weird and freaks out if you add a little water and gets all grainy like sugar. turns out adding even more water (but just a lil) makes things happy again.

i lived in texas for a year and there would be a 3 cm snow warning and they would cancel school and then it would end up being like 24 degrees.
here, we get 7 feet of snow and no one gives a crap. i've had one snow day in canada in university when there was a really bad blizzard. but that's only cause it was exam time and the professors dont want to have to drive in.
i totally got to miss my stats exam though.

So, in biology, the teacher was copying these powerpoint presentations about kidneys onto everyone's flash drives and I named my flash drive "AWESAM" and the laptop my teacher was using was connected to a projector so everyone could see it. Everyone was oblivious to it, except my two mates that are in my Chemistry class and they pissed themselves laughing and I was like STFU!

Aiight! So, in biology, the teacher was copying these powerpoint presentations about kidneys onto everyone's flash drives and I named my flash drive "AWESAM" and the laptop my teacher was using was connected to a projector so everyone could see it. Everyone was oblivious to it, except my two mates that are in my Chemistry class and they pissed themselves laughing and I was like STFU!
They called me 'Awesam' the rest of the day and could not stop laughing and made my Chem teacher change my name on the role from 'Awesome' to 'Awesam' Lol.
