guise guise. i just had a pretty epic dream.

like... pretty fairly big meetup of us at a theme park. it was pretty awesome.

let's see... who was there... me (ofc), bouty, pixcell, juni, stacey (i think?), cj (i think?), and argh i can't remember any else specifically, but there was at least nine of us.

highlights: having some sort of a race on a circular water slide type thing. driving pixc's car (?) with juni, 'cause he had to get out and wash it (as we were still driving. in the rain. don't ask, i guess... lol) but he was moonwalking in front of the car fast enough that i didn't run him over, so that part was pretty cool! we also ended up kind of getting special access to certain areas that weren't overcrowded and right before i woke up we were getting food from a vending machine with pretty nice food. (some guy had gotten some massive pocky-like snack right before i woke up.)

They keep thinking I'm "super rich" cause I have my recording equipment and its pure jealousy.

no offense bro, but if you can afford a bunch of recording equipment/instruments, and to hire a bodyguard/PR agent, and then move to and live in Boston *as a high school student*, you are at least somewhat loaded. living in a city is damn expensive, much less actually *employing* someone.

@Champi, sorry for your loss. we're here for you. <3

wow. well i hate to add to all the complaining and misery, but i just found out a bombshell today. so you know all the problems with my teeth i've been having? turns out its not my teeth (although it was brought on my the removal of my wisdom tooth) but this

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trigeminal_neuralgia

i guess the nerve is permanently damaged, possibly from not having my wisdom tooth out 10 years ago like i was supposed to. so here's the thing - as most of you know I am an alcoholic/drug addict. i'm actually an ex heroin addict. and this pain im in is debilitating. i can't eat, i can't sleep, i can't function. the dentist told me the only pain med that might work is morphin or oxycontin which i obviously cant take. at this point im looking at chronic excruciating pain for at least a year, possibly forever, and i'm TERRIFIED it's gonna send me back out again. i've been off heroin for about a year and a half and booze for almost 4.5 months now,and i just cant see how im going to get through this.
the doctor looked at me and shrugged and said "i'm sorry, but short of pain meds there's nothing we can do". i'm going to talk to my family doctor to try some of the anti convulsant meds and maybe something like acupuncture.
seriously though FML. what kind of cruel cosmic joke is this? "ya ok let's give the heroin addict who's trying to stay clean and finally getting her life in order a ****ing chronic pain disorder that can only be treated with opiates??"
sometimes i REALLY REALLY hate God. There better be a damn good reason for this.

oh and the dentist just kept saying how rare this is, and it only happens in less then 0.2% of cases, and that he had mentioned it was a possibility. like that's supposed to make me feel better?

ugh i typed up a long post, and it got eaten because my connection is ****...

anyway, juni we're here for you. look into alternate methods of pain management. might taking OTC pain killers help even a little bit?

if it helps, you're not the only one in that sort of situation. my uncle, who is also in recovery, was recently in a bad motorcycle crash. like he had to have multiple surgeries within the week of it happening (almost a month ago) and is still having them even as far after the fact as last week. not sure whether he was allowed pain meds, but it's definitely not been a good place for him either. :s

hey juni, when you go to your doctor tomorrow, ask him if it would be possible to have a nerve block on whatever nerve is causing this. my dad is a lawyer, but he sees a lot of clients with severe nerve problems, and a lot of them end up having the nerve blocked (or in some cases even taken out) and it actually helps a lot. i dont know if this would be possible for your situation, but its worth asking about .

its supposed to help for nerve pain and damage. in addition, i will also be happier, stop wetting the bed, and stop laughing uncontrollably! bonus!

if it doesnt work then we'll move on to try an anti convulsant, which will help control the electrical pulses in my brain and therefore through the nerve, but those meds are really pricey and i have a ****ty job and no drug plan. i just feel better though knowing that i have something that might help.

This is my side of the story... Tohis can post her side... and probably should because my story is probably confusing and full of errors (I just woke up and have a slight headache). Also, INB4 COOL STORY BRO

blahblah cut

SORRY, TL;DR

Robot was uber nervous for the whole gig, haha. Gig was nice, though I really didn't like the party people who had to put up a ****ing pit. At a dubstep gig. Seriously guys, seriously? Also, Skream's selection didn't really hit it with quite a lot of people (lots of filthier stuff, mehhh), but I think most people skanked away nonetheless, haha.
All the DJ/producers were filthy drunk + high, so it was somewhat amusing to watch and listen to, esp. as I wasn't that drunk and my friend (not Robot, but the guy) was completely sober. But yeah, we left for Skream's hotel, although almost all of the other bass-heads went home/to other after parties (mayhap they thought these guys' idea was plain idiotic). Stalker DJ and his posse (meaning the DJ's/producers) were all, "shiit, should we do this? Or should we not? I mean, it IS Skream after all, who's FINALLY in Finland, etc etc". Needless to say, even though they were all, "yeah, this kinda stuff happens at every gig", I highly doubt that. They were a bit nervous, haha.
Like Robot, I didn't talk with Skream other than the greetings. It was a weird situation, and I didn't really have anything to say, so ehh. I was more happy bombing the Finnish crew with questions, I think so much that I made myself look like an idiot, haha. The friend of mine was happy just being able to talk with a longtime idol of his, this one Finnish really ****ing famous (UG kind of famous) rapper/producer. Have to say, I was kind of "woooow" too, because I just might have even more respect for this guy than for Skream, ahaha.
Wasn't all happy with all the drug talk ("Yeah, so I have three needles(?) if someone wants some heroin."), but as they didn't use any (other than weed) there, whatever.
And yeah, the stalker DJ was the standard kind of drunk: all hugging and touching Robot. Would've been more than happy to get into her pants, haha. But I'm all thumbs up for them (as long as Robot doesn't do any drugs......). ;P
Skream was looking a bit annoyed and tired, so we left, blahblah, went to a nearby club as it's famous for its after hour parties and only my friend had visited it before. Stalker DJ got us in for free. (Ahaha, he was so nervous, "How the **** am I going to get us in? 'Yo, so I like host a club here, and I know this one guuuuy.....'" But we got in.) It was the after party of a trance/psy-trance gig, so esp. as there wasn't that many people there, our little posse was all, "... not. my. scene." So we left quite early. Blahblah, went home. Now I know where the stalker DJ lives, haha. Actually kinda close to my place, funny. "Deep into the East."

AS FOR THE GIG and Skream-stuff, we got the world exclusive first play of a new track of his. Didn't quite get which one the track was, but iirc, it was all nice. Not a banger, I think, but you'll meditate/skank to it. Also, he played a remix of Metallica's Seek & Destroy -- got wheeled three (THREE!!!!) times. Really, really ****ing awesome track (or at least the beginning of it), you WILL go mad if you hear it (esp. on a great club PA). We Finns sure do love some grand ol' 'Tallica<3 AHHHH, I think it was Bassnectar's remix (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGOfD2OWQmU). Niiiice.
Also found out how Skream makes tracks: according to his own words, he can't play for ****; he draws the melodies. Alas, had too much fun listening to the Finnish drunkards talk that I didn't really listen to Skream & co.'s talks of how they make music etc. But whatever.

But all in all, this will be remembered for quite some time. All the quotes, the quotes! "Yyyyeaah, you really trying to say you aren't on acid? Seriously? You ARE on acid, mate. ... got any?" "Oi c'mon, what the ****? Two hookers and six guys?! So who's gonna just watch and who's gonna do it?" "I'm not gay if I just watch it." "What happens in Finland stays in Sweden." etc etc. <3 And the stories: "So the guy came with a gun and was all, 'either I pay you and I kill you, or I take the money and let you live.' ... 'Just pay and shoot, I just want the money! Or, just pay and I'll give you a wank'" :D

The End of TL;DR. Had fun. Now I really need to eat something. (And whereas Robot continues in the relationship problem thread, Imma keep my stuff personal this time, hah. :P)

so i moved in and now within the first week i feel like **** cause of some family issues. Yesterday i had a really bad conversation with my parents over the phone and i probably said some things that im going to regret later. To avoid from even talking to them i took my cell phone apart and deleted their numbers. When my mom did call i answered because joanna made me. Then as we were talking i said that i didn't feel wanted & that i feel like im a complete fail because they've never supported my music. I haven't talked to my dad at all & even though he wants me to go with him to another music festival im not. I hated having to tell my mom that but i had to. i had to let them know how i feel about them at some point.

The reason i feel like a failure is partly because of school. My cousins always get on the honor role, they got college scholarship offers and they're accepted by my family. I dont fit in because I dont play sports, im a musician and a total outcast. I've thought about committing suicide because i know that my family wouldn't care. They may claim to be proud of me but they're just lying to me.

Since this **** has been going on, i just keep crying. i couldn't sleep last night cause of my eyes hurting and my head was bothering me. i dont even feel like playing guitar or making any music cause it'll only make things worse for my emotions. when i start to play my guitar or even look at it, i start to cry.

I don't think that'd help. I tried telling my mother about my inner demons one night and half way through the look on her face made me stop.

aww. you can tell me about your inner demons, daniel. i'm sure i have as many problems as you do.

anyway, tdc'ers, i've come to you with an idea. or a proposition. or a question. would it be possible to get some decent feedback on this? if so, thanks a lot...

hi, my name is brittany. and... i hate my name. =]

all my life i've pretty much hated my name. not only because of the 60 nicknames that have come along with it, but because of the fact that its just not me. when most people think of a typically brittany, the image that comes to mind is either britney spears or the blonde-headed, ditzy cheerleader. i'm neither of those, and brittany is so freaking common in my age group (3rd most popular name in the year i was born) that i dont even respond to my name anymore in the hallways due to the insane amount of brittany's that turn their heads. there's rarely a class in which there isn't a second brittany, and i dont like to be associated with the others who share my name.

some people have said its a very pretty name. i dont agree with that either. the name brittany paired with my last name sounds super nasal-ey and doesn't appeal to me at all. even the fact that it has connections to a region in france doesn't sit well with me anymore. i pretty much dont feel like it really expresses who i am at all anymore, and i'm not sure if i want to go through the rest of my life with that name.

that being said, my parents have always known i dont like it. they've continuously offered the possibility of legally changing my name to something else. but the problem is, what would i change it to? and would i really be happy with a new name? i'd be stuck with it after all if i did that, and what if it doesn't reflect me in 20 years?

i've come to ask what everyone here thinks of the possibility of me officially changing my name to Aria. since i've come here, i've sort of 'adopted' this pseudonym, and its made a surprisingly big impact on my life and my personality. i feel more confident as aria, more outgoing and more proud of who i am. i feel like this name reflects me so much better than brittany, and i think it sounds better too =].

so now i have a decision to make. and if i make this decision to change my name, i can do it in two ways: the first is to legally change it. but the problems with that are what i stated earlier. would i still feel the same about aria in 20 years? would that name be suitable in a professional environment? (psh like brittany really is...) and is it too out of the ordinary (its not that well known) to be accepted as my actual name? it IS in the top 500 name list, but i've never met an actual aria. i've only known of an actress with that name, and one other girl from a school near mine who has it.

the second possibility is to wait until college. as i see it, i could literally walk in on the first day, go to the people in charge of my file or even my professors and say 'oh there's been an error. my legal name is brittany, but i go by aria. everyone calls me aria' and literally make that name for myself. like how my friend's real legal name is charlotte, but everyone calls her nellie and they don't know her by anything else. i could do that because i'd be starting over with new people who haven't associated me with the name brittany for 16 years. would that be believable too?

i talked to my mom about the name aria and she said she'd have to get used to calling me by that and thinking of me as aria. that's one reason why i wouldn't want to change it now- all of my friends and relatives know me as brittany and i feel it would be too hard for them to make the change. that's why i'm leaning toward the second option to make the name for myself in college. but still, would i regret doing it? its a huge decision that would definitely affect my life, and i'm not sure how everything would turn out if i actually went through with it.

can anyone put out a few thoughts?

@Daniel well i can see how talking to your mom may not have gone over well. she's going to worry about you. it might work better if you talked to a counsellor or someone who is more removed from the situation. i wouldn't write off the approach yet, but you know, do what you're comfortable with.

@aria i have a couple friends named Brittany. imo, Brittany > Britney. there is a difference.

one of them once mentioned that she preferred a slightly different pronunciation that imo sounds more sophisticated. more like a "Britain-y" rather than "Brit-ney." so there's a third option--to "own" the name by asking people to pronounce it differently. (then again, that kind of ends up with other issues, 'cause most people will assume it's "Brit-ney" and you'll have to correct them.)

(as a side note, i've decided to kind of "take charge" of my own name, by purposefully not capitalizing it. not that i've ever had issues with my name, i've always liked it. i think it feels more "me" that way, though.)

aside from that, if you want to do the "Aria" route. i think it's probably not worth it to legally change it unless you really want to. from what i know about it (which is admittedly not that much) it costs money, and you have to go through court/legal proceedings to do it.

i've had a friend--well, acquaintance more like it--who changed her name, it was weird even from my removed standpoint. it's going to be weird regardless of when or where you do it, so if you want to do it, just do it. it does make it easier if you do it at the beginning of a school year, but you don't have to necessarily wait until college.

Daniel_Rider
6th Jun 2010, 02:05
@aria Thank you very much for the offer, but my demons aren't like other people's... They're really out there. But I can tell you if you want to know.

And I say do the college option, sounds much easier and a more gradual change.

Also also, your sig picture is dead. D:

Change it, don't change it. Either way, the chances of regretting your decision are just as equal to the chances of being 100% happy with it.

My way of looking at things is to never regret anything ever. That's how I stayed out of prison.

About changing names... been there and done that. I changed my name about 1 or 2 years ago when I got sick of people always mentioning how odd my name is, etc. etc. So I changed it to one of my another names officially and I haven't regretted it at all. A lot of my friends and even some of my family were happy about it. Only ones who still call me by old name (accidentally) are my sister, brother and my father.

M3311

@Aria: Listen, if you think 'Brittany' doesn't reflect who you believe you are as a person, you could have 'Brittany' made as a middle name, and have 'Aria' as your first name. Personally, I like both names, they express your individuality to me, and probably to most of us here, but the reality is, it's down to you. Like Pants said, the chances of you regretting your name change are pretty much the same, but who know? You might get used to the change, like R0B0T. Me, I dislike my name, but I wouldn't change it, because it reminds me that it contains the entirety of me, and who I am and what I stand for. If I had my name changed to 'Nathaniel'[ The idea of which I'm still tempted by], it would only make me feel like I would be living in a false world, and I would always feel ashamed to be called 'Nathaniel' by my parents, who already think I'm odd enough.

But again, the choice is yours. Best of luck with it. =]

Hmm.. ok. Why does it being belt-driven make it crappy?

tohis
9th Jun 2010, 00:30
Again, this is from the point of an amateur DJ:
If you're planning to DJ, or especially if you're planning to scratch, a belt-driven turntable will break very quickly: it's made to spin records forward; not backwards. Now take a direct-driven (? can't remember the correct word, but you get the idea.) turntable, such as Techics SL-1200: you can spin a record forward, backward, however you like -- the turntable will not break, they're made for DJ's.

As for other reasons why not to buy the afore-mentioned Stanton: the cheaper it is, the crappier quality it is. Sound quality is far from being good, the turntable's probably made cheaply so it might - very likely WILL - break quite soon, etc etc. It's the age old truth: the cheaper it is, the crappier it is. Also, take these Technics for example: they're pretty much the standard in clubs all around the world; they're known to last for dozens of years without any fixing; and if you get tired of them, people will pay almost the original price for them. Pretty much the only downside of Technics is, they cost ~500 EUR each.

I like that logic. Tell me, does this same ethic apply to Digital DJing and time-coded vinyl?

Technics are expensive but also the best turntables since they re on the market. Like Pioneer gear for people who use CDs. But if you just want to play some records or do a little dj stuff you don't need to spend 500-600 bucks on a turntable off course.

Pants3000
9th Jun 2010, 01:25
But you're not slowing the actual turntable down, you're slowing the actual vinyl itself. So the motor shouldn't really wear out super quick if you're not messing with the turntable itself...

...unless y'all don't know what you doing. Right, Tohis?

This. Like I said, I was writing those from the POV of a DJ; if you do very little record spinning, but more plain ol' listening, then yeah, a belt-driven would be okay. (Sound quality is a whole 'nother thing, but yeah, the cheaper, the crappier...)

I like that logic. Tell me, does this same ethic apply to Digital DJing and time-coded vinyl?

Ehh, I have absolutely no experience with digital DJ'ing (aka laptop DJ'ing?), so can't say anything about that. As for time-coded vinyl... cheap turntable is cheap, belt-driven is belt-driven. Afaik, it's essentially the same as playing normal records, but it's just that you play mp3's "through" those Serato-or-such vinyl records. NB: I don't have much experience with Serato etc; I've only tried it a few times.
Did this answer your question? I might've misunderstood... it's 3:30am, haha...ha.

But you're not slowing the actual turntable down, you're slowing the actual vinyl itself. So the motor shouldn't really wear out super quick if you're not messing with the turntable itself...

...unless y'all don't know what you doing. Right, Tohis?

Ever tried slowing down a record on a belt-driven turntable? "SCREEEECH CRACK" etc noises. Almost managed to break an old belt-driven turntable of mine, and I know plenty of people who "used to get spanked thanks to trying scratching on dad's belt-driven turntable" -> said turntable got broken.

I actually had to go test whether the whole platter stops when I slow down the record: no, it doesn't. You press the record so softly that even the slip mat won't stop spinning. If it does, you're pressing too hard. (This was tested on a direct-driven turntable, note.)

So, ehh, I guess a belt-driven turntable wouldn't break in a matter of minutes, esp. if you don't scratch. I can't remember the exact thing what happens when you spin back a record, but that does do harm to a belt-driven turntable.

If you want to use vinyl, I think time code has the vinyl feeling but you have the ease of modern technology. Searching and buying all those records is a very expensive thing. Your records shop does not have everything you want and if you buy a record on Discogs half the price is shipping.

Yeah, the so called Serato DJ's like exactly that: it's bloody easy. No need to travel with heavy bags, when all you need is a laptop, etc etc. Though quite many (most?) DJ's I know buy vinyl, then rip them and use the ripped wavs on Serato etc.

Iirc, at least Serato still has flaws though: the sound quality is not as good as a real vinyl's. (Also, if you're like me -- an office monkey -- you don't want to stare at a laptop screen when you "relax" by DJ'ing.) Though it might depend on who you ask: ask a vinyl freak, and they will say real vinyl > time coded vinyl; ask someone who almost hates vinyl: time coded vinyl > real vinyl.

Oh oh oh, AND! The reason why many oldfags recommend newbies to start DJ'ing with real vinyl is, because with Serato etc. you can SEE when the records are beat matched; with real vinyl you need to learn to hear it. So, yeah, at least start with real vinyl, or if you refuse to ditch time coded vinyl, then only look at the screen when you need to choose the track. I.e. learn to beat match and mix by ear. When you can do that, feel free to mix by looking at the bloody screen.

Well, then... sucks to be you! 8D

No, but to be serious, you can practise beat matching by e.g. taking two YouTube videos (i.e. songs) and trying to beat match them.
Like I said, I have no experience with digital (laptop) DJ'ing, so I have no idea whether you can mix by ear with those programs. But Serato etc -- they'd cost you more than a new turntable anyway, so me thinks time coded vinyl is out of question. Save up, meanwhile practise with youtube tracks, and then buy a fancy new turntable and/or fix your old one?

I know vinyl is where it all started but it's kinda old skool now. You can't blame younger people for little or no experience with vinyl. It's all CDs and laptops now. And with modern equipment with bpm counters, beat matching by ear is not really necessary any more. I agree beat matching with a counter is not really hard and using your ears requires more skills but why all the effort if your equipment helps you.

And yes, I use the sync button on my recently bought MIDI controller. Why? Because I can. The sync button is not always perfect but saves time to focus on all the other stuff. You can focus on effects and looping and stuff, something you can't do with vinyls. I sometimes do connect a vinyl player to my MIDI controller input, so I also mix that channel (without a bpm counter).

And I believe with digital aid DJing became more accessible. And sync button/bpm counter or not: a **** DJ is a **** DJ.

A **** DJ is, indeed, a **** DJ, no matter how technically good (this: mixing by ear.) they are. And I agree that vinyl is "old school", why mix by ear when the equipment's there to help you, etc etc. BUT. Really, is it fun anymore if in the future mixing is basically just "click. click. click. song 2 perfectly matched with song 1"? I don't know, but personally I have more respect for those who mix by ear AND know what tracks to play, as opposed to those who know what to play but mix by looking at the screen and going all "click click click".

I do admit, though, that basically this is just a question of opinion: I like it old school; others like effects, looping*, etc -- "new school". I'm mightily biased anyway, as I'm an amateur turntablist and my so called teacher (of DJ'ing, turntablism and playing drums) is very much old school.
*You can loop with plain ol' vinyl, just not the rapid kind of looping. (Y'know, think of f5'ing a webpage.) Looping aka juggling is fun. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_uXSe8qulw) (Cf. the original track (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FR_nhRxxN-U).)

On a happier note, I get out of school Thursday!

One of the worst feelings in life: watching helplessly as your drugged up dog is taken to the operating room for a surgery. I almost cried -- even though nothing bad is going to happen. But he looked so... dead. :(

I know that feeling. :( What's even worse is when your pet is put to sleep.

Still saddest moment of my life was when my only 3 year old cat was put to sleep because he was too sick and in constant pain. I bawled my eyes out literally.

I know right. That's why I was biting my lip: my dog's almost 14 y/o, and while the sedatives kicked in, it looked like he stopped breathing at times. Hence I was reminded of the inevitable last visit to the vet. :( (I will bawl out for weeks when that day comes.)

im on step nine and making ammends. i made ammends to my cat on the weekend cause their were times when i really neglected him and didnt take proper care of him. so he had to go live with my mom but he's happy now. i dont think he really understood the ammends. but i gave him treats so he liked that.

Dont forget about the day that all our admins were banned by this jamaican hacker, and then he tried to turn the forum into some sort of jamaican e-bay, where everything was just green and yellow t-shirts and weed.
Then, one of us eventually seduced him and in his distraction, we took over and got the forum back, taking some nice weed from him.

Yeah, im lying.
