Ugh, guys, it must be flu season, because I woke up in the middle of the night last night and was sniffing and hacking my ring up last night. Woke up this morning to nausea, blocked sinuses, cramps, headache, and a sore throat. Oh, and I think there's a fever in there, too. I think I got it from my Geography teacher who had an awful cold the past few days. Eugh, feel like starting a flu group here. =P

I've been full of snot for these pass few days but I gotta say I've been having so much fun this week. This week was my first proper week starting college, doing media studies. Using macs, playing with photoshop and the audio equipment, doing some filming and talking about dubstep, well fun.
My older sister was the first to leave the household and go live in Manchester (I was like, "Yes! 1 down, 3 annoying sisters to go!" jk). But seriously, it was emotional and I will miss her but she will she will come back to visit so it's all good. :)
Also, I did my first ever gig as a drummer for the band I'm in, playing in a small hall at a dance show. That was really good fun, even though I accidentally threw my drumstick across the stage during our first set! :s
Oh and got around doing a recreation of a 2ManyDJ's Live Mash-Up (http://www.mediafire.com/?dkpo1y7kk10dqqc) that I like. (Veryshamelessplugforpeopletolistentoit :P)

I just got a phone call this morning that our school has been officially closed for a month for repairs. I have a week off for road construction, then it's off to a different school temporarily. I'm kind of nervous..
But we are running out of supplies, (such as food, gas for cars, etc.) I live on a rural island, and the bridge connecting us to the mainland has been destroyed. The only way off the island is by boat, but that takes a long time.
Nonetheless, we have enough food that will last us till the bridge and roads get fixed. Us Newfoundlanders are tough. ;) At least I've still got the internet to keep me entertained. :music:

I have a similar situation with my friends except that like 3/4 of them are into mainstream. They usually take out their Ipods or phones and play kesha or justin bieber, which is the cue for the rest of us to leave, bust out a boom box, and play homework.

Same as 'Underground' the only way a band or artist is gonna be 'underground' is if their tracks are CD only and played on local radio stations, but they are actually really good. But it just doesn't happen anymore. As long as people are uploading their track onto youtube or soundcloud, nothing will be underground. As for mainstream. Pretty much every genre has now rolled into each other that there is no mainstream anymore. Theres just music.

Personally I wouldn't really "sign" this. (How to translate a Finnish saying into English? Haha. "Agree on"?) Mainstream: think Lady Gaga. Her face is everywhere: unless you live on a remote island with no connection to anything, you will know this artist. But then there's underground (with its many levels; "semi-mainstream"): an artist could be world-famous, but only in the scene he or she is active in. Think:
1) Daft Punk. As famous as they are, they really aren't that well-known after all. Sure, people usually recognize their tracks ("Oh, this 'one more time' is DP's? Cool."), but they don't know the actual band.
2) DJ Qbert. How many of even you guys know him? THE most famous turntablist in the whole world, but really, how many people know him?
3) Actual UG. Think your friend's garage band, who are playing at tiny local venues. There's the true underground, me thinks.

Though an artist can be underground even if they're uploading their stuff on the net. Because let's be honest: pretty much everyone and their mom are making music, so there's just too much stuff. Hence someone will have to be "underground". As for "genres VS. just music" -- there are genres. Sure, in the MAINSTREAM (ahahasnort) genres might be so mixed up that you can't point and say "this is this, that's that". But in the underground scene or in "local mainstream" there can be plenty of definitely different genres. I wouldn't want filth- or gorestep anywhere near my "meditating dubstep", for example.

But this is just my two cents; everyone has their own opinions. :)

I say as apposed to coloring it all the way, just do more of the one solid color ones, like the pink one. I think they'd look good like that. (But that's not to say that I think the b&w ones don't look good.)

Either way, it's pretty awesome, much better than what I'd normally do for a lino print, and by coincidence, I'm working on a Guy-Man helmet for an Art project at school, and it's probably going to look very simple. Yours has an aura of cuteness about it, and the 'ATW' inspired background is a very nice touch, too.

I think I'm go to the hospital if it happens again, because I very rarely get sick, especially for no apparant reason. I felt a bit gross the night before, I just put it down to exhaustion. it's linocut, though iirc, the block is actually rubber? idk... it was kinda a pain since it was so rubbery, i much prefer wood or actual lino, something more brittle, 'cause of how i tend to work in carving, i break bits off at the end rather than completely carving them out. (that can kind of bite me in the ass when i'm working with wood, though. lol oops)

it was something i did pretty quick--like i think 5-6 hours total, from putting the pencil to the paper for initial design through to lifting the print from the block. it's also very small (4in x 6in), so maybe i might do something cooler, but larger.

and thanks for noticing ATW! it's actually a cross between ATW and A2k7 (if you note the floor; the pyramid isn't quite as obvious as it was in my mind) so i figured i had a nice inadvertent cross-catalog representation from Homework up through A2k7. :]

in other news i'm pretty intensely missing England/UK/Japan/countries-with-trains right now. i have no idea why. D: US sucks... :/

Thanks. I've been looking around, but tbh, I'm having a bit of an artistic crisis too. Like, I'm very nervous about my work atm because I've just started back at uni and it seems everyone else is waaaaaaaaaay better than me at everything.

Anyways, I think I've decided to save up my wages and go to ibiza next year, I now I've been saying I'll go to Canada, but I think it'll be cheaper to go to ibiza for 4 nights for my birthday hopefully. Get away from everything. Lets hope I can save enough...

I used to love airplanes, like, to the point of obsession, and couldn't wait to for a chance to fly in them, but only up until about a year ago. Now I kinda dread the idea. I don't like the weightless feeling when the plane changes speed or hits turbulence, I always feel like we're going to fall out of the sky. But, still, there really is nothing that compares to the feeling of looking out the window and down to the ground.

I think my interest came from my parents. They were both in the Air Force where my dad was an air traffic controller, so I grew up identifying and watching planes. But now that my dad is gone, airplanes have just gotten kinda meh.

Now I just drive everywhere, really fast :D

talk to your teacher. even if he/she doesn't give extra credit, talking to him/her shows that you're concerned about your grade. if you show concern and put in genuine effort to improve, in my experience, he/she is more likely to be a little forgiving in terms of the numbers. (like you know, don't expect any miracles, but if you're straddling the line between D+ and C- he/she might bump you up to the C-.) after all, teachers want you to learn this stuff; they're not trying to make you suffer.

how long is this course? if ends in December, you might be a little more pressed for time, but if it ends in May, you can totally pull it up in time.

what i think will be most helpful is that you do extra practice or work with someone (either your teacher or a friend/parent/tutor/etc) to make sure that you understand the concepts. doing better on the tests/quizzes/homework/classwork is what is really going to pull your grade up.

when i was in middle/high school and struggling with some algebra/geometry/trig/etc, my dad bought me an old used college book on "technical" math (whatever that is). it literally started with basic addition/subtraction and goes all the was up through trig and stuff--it's fantastic! i used that for extra practice (since answers were in the back) and worked through the problems with his help when i needed it and it really helped me in terms of class. i continued using that book through pre-cal and even while i was in college; i still have it now and use it for reference when i need help with math. :]

if i were in your situation (and i have been before! just not so much with algebra) i would go to the teacher, explain your concerns about your grade and ask if he/she has any suggestions, can recommend any books or other resources to help, or can spend any extra time with you/assign extra work to make sure that you understand the concepts going on in class.

if you have issues with your teacher (like he/she doesn't explain things clearly or is unsympathetic) then try to see another math teacher in your school or someone else who understands the concepts you're covering in algebra.

lastly, i'm not too great with numbers, but i'm not too bad at algebra, i can try to help you with it if you want. or maybe boutboulman can help, since he's a super mathsy dude.

The American Grading Scale isn't that different to the scale we have for our Leaving Certificate Exams. We have Higher and Ordinary Levels, and different grades for each:

Higher Level:

A1 = 95-100
A2 = 90-94
B1 = 85-90
B2 = 80-84
B3 = 75-80
C1 = 70-74
C2 = 65-70
etc, all the way down to D3, which is like, a 40, or something.

OLs are marked on a lower scale, with an A1 equal to a C3, and the points go as low as 5.

For the LCVP [Leaving Cert Vocational Programme] students, there's Distionctions, Merits, and Passes, in that order. [Highest to Lowest.]

in Poland we have similar grading system, except we use digits instead of letters, and the lowest value of grade is the worst grade, it's like:

A = 6
B = 5
C = 4
D = 3
