Thomas? Horse faced? To be honest, I like Guy-Man more than Thomas (GM being a bit of a "hobbit" like me and Thomas reminded me of the guy who left me after exchanging carnal knowledge. You know, those FNR types) but to be fair, Thomas isn't horse faced because he's got nicely set teeth. It just so happens that he's got a thin face.

Wake up - Yay it's Valentine's Day! ****, I have exams.
School - I have banana bread for the guy I like [as it's his favourite] and I gave him most, if not all of it, hoping he'd get the hint. A friend kept saying to me "Ask him to be your Valentine!" I was all "Nooooo, that's make it awkward." I later berated myself for not even trying. By the end of the day, I had about six or seven Valentines. Two of them were guys, and one [at school] was only messing.
Get home: Find the banana bred next to the carrot cake which has merdeloads of nuts in it, rage at Mum, because now he can't eat any of it as he's allergic to nuts [deathly] - but I didn't tell Mum that, it was more like "I have friends who are deathly allergic to nuts and RAAAAAAAAAAAGGE."
Bed - Sad that I didn't even bother asking him, confused if he got the hint about the b. bread or not, but happy that I did get a few Valentines... If one of them had been my crush, I would have been ecstatic, but noooo, I had to be a prudish prude and turn my nose up at the idea instead if having the stones to do it. Or maybe I wanted to spare him the humiliation. GAH.

ok guys, let me tell you a story about my recent adventures. lol

my interview went pretty well yesterday, and despite how much i was prepping/freaking out, i actually wasn't that nervous once i got there.

celebratory Lush trip, visited a pretty cool zoo, but after that i started getting a bad headache and felt crappier and crappier with this stupid headache.

when we got back to the spa where we were staying i got ill to the point where i threw up three times. :[ in addition to feeling sick, gross, and embarrassed, the Korean lady in charge at one point was basically accusing me of being a stupid, drunk American; no sympathy at all. :/

at this point i was like "ok, let's gtfo." but i felt bad for it being basically a waste of money and a hassle to get a hotel and stuff. before we left i had not one, but two missing cellphone scares where i thought it had been stolen/lost in the midst of me being ill.

when we get to the hotel, the front doors are stuck, and due to poor phrasing, we think that the receptionist is going to cancel our reservation. finally get to room and i'm just fed up/ill/tired/etc. get sick *again* but feel better after a long shower and finally get some sleep.

wake up and feel tremendously better. have nice late breakfast at a French cafe/bakery and then shopped at the huge Asian mart, where there was great tea success when we found milktea _and_ legendary Thai tea! then we came home.

still have no idea why i was so ill. i've had a headcold thing for a while so dunno? may have been an allergic reaction to something in Korean food. (prob wasn't food poisoning tho, since my roommate ate almost exactly the same food and was fine.) mysterious mysteries.

tldr; the interview i was freaking out about went surprisingly well. some other fun stuff happened. also sudden miserable/mysterious sickness. the end.

lol Good story there Piro! Kinda reminds of when I was on a college trip to Madrid and in the middle of the night, my roommate passed out and threw up after drinking something weird. Yo, peeps living in the US: I know checks are widely (very, very widely) used in the US, but there are a few (very, very few?) people/companies that use wire transfers and online/electronic banking instead of checks. Now the question is, is online banking really such a weird and almost non-existant concept in the US that people/companies still have to use or refuse to stop using checks?

Because, from the POV of a European (esp. Finnish) person/company, this is utter ****. Finnish banks charge gazillions of Euros for cashing checks -- if they even cash checks. ("Heee, you have a check? Wow, I've never seen one, I don't know how they work!") I am not amused.

Now the question is, is online banking really such a weird and almost non-existant concept in the US that people/companies still have to use or refuse to stop using checks?

Because, from the POV of a European (esp. Finnish) person/company, this is utter ****. Finnish banks charge gazillions of Euros for cashing checks -- if they even cash checks. ("Heee, you have a check? Wow, I've never seen one, I don't know how they work!") I am not amused.

The reason that checks are used so much in the states is probably the reasoning of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Checks work perfectly well, and are easy to use. And anyone can use them. Hell, I'm only 17 and I can cash checks from my job by myself. With online banking you need an internet connection and all that information, just a big hassle to completely change the entire system that everyone already knows how to use in this country. After all, checks aren't really inefficient. What would you say is the benefit of changing from checks to online banking?

this is very weird to me, because i almost never have to use checks (unless you're talking about getting paid for work and whatnot). are you having specific issues with something you're trying to do? it might be more complicated for international transfers and i'm just unaware of it, but i almost exclusively use online banking/transferring for personal stuff/paying bills and what have you. what's true is that it's not really enforced. the whole "paperless" thing is still seen as an option (and one that's not used enough, imo). a lot of older people are technophobes lol, like Baloo said, i think they see it as "why change, if there's nothing wrong with the old system?". they stick with what they know. also not everyone has the internet, which is the simplest reason haha.

like seriously. this winter and last winter have seen record breaking snow for my area, and we JUST and i mean JUST got rid of the 2+ feet coated with ice that has been laying around for the past month. like, seriously, it just melted. yesterday was the first day where it was completely totally gone. and now we have a few more inches on the ground. imma go write to the weather gods and demand they make it rain hot sauce...

The reason that checks are used so much in the states is probably the reasoning of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Checks work perfectly well, and are easy to use. And anyone can use them. Hell, I'm only 17 and I can cash checks from my job by myself. With online banking you need an internet connection and all that information, just a big hassle to completely change the entire system that everyone already knows how to use in this country. After all, checks aren't really inefficient. What would you say is the benefit of changing from checks to online banking?


this is very weird to me, because i almost never have to use checks (unless you're talking about getting paid for work and whatnot). are you having specific issues with something you're trying to do? it might be more complicated for international transfers and i'm just unaware of it, but i almost exclusively use online banking/transferring for personal stuff/paying bills and what have you.

Yeh, I know they're easy to use inside the US, because like you said, everyone's used to using checks. But when paying bills etc. by a check to outside the US... really, we in Finland (and many other countries, e.g. Sweden) do. Not. Use. Checks. Everyone and their cat has a credit/debit card, with which to pay in stores and take cash from an ATM. And everyone and their mom has an internet connection, so they pay bills and send money online (= wire transfer) -- and if you don't have access to internet or don't know how to use online banks (e.g. older people), there are naturally the physical banks, where lines are getting shorter thanks to most people doing stuff online: on their computer, or even mobile phone! Less paper, less work. Many, many people (me included) don't really use cash anymore, because it's so easy to use credit/debit cards and online banks.

But like I've said, I don't really know checks, except that it's a real pain to use them -- so, you tell me, what are the plus sides of using checks? How do they even work -- say you get a check from your job, how do you cash it/pay with it? Also, from the POV of an employer: how do you pay your employees by check? Iirc, you have to get a stack of empty checks, and then you write on them? So slow, such a waste of paper: when we pay salaries, I just have to log into our bank account, and click a few times -- and tadah, the money's gone to the employee's account. No chance of checks or cash being lost; when the money's been sent, it's there in the safety of the employee's account (i.e. ones and zeros). (If it's a café or such, who deal with cash, naturally they can pay in cash. But as far as I know, that's really, really rare in Finland.)

And yes, it is way more complicated in international situations, especially when there's currency changes involved. Hence the filthy expensive service costs when you try to cash a check in Finland. Say I've got a check of 500 USD: depending on the bank, I might have to pay 30% as service cost. When our client in the US just could've spent a bloody hour to solve how to do wire transfers, where the costs are a flat sum of 30 USD or less. (Though how much they have to pay... dunno, but we only pay max. that sum no matter how big a sum we get/send.)

But then again, I am a lover of plastic cards and ones and zeros, so yeah... yeah. I know some of my arguments are flawed.

Lmao! We had a really bad dose of snow last year around the end of November through December to early January, and it just sort of went away. Not that the county councils did much apart from gritting and salting the roads, because we only have maybe one or two snowploughs in the whole country, and they got stuck, whereas UH-Mericans have several hundred of them. I think. No fair.


Checks work perfectly well, and are easy to use.

Lololol, we use cash/credit/debit/laser cards in Europe/Ireland. So much easier.

i agree. from an employee perspective, a check is just a step between you getting your money. you get it, go to the bank, fill out a deposit slip, give it to the teller and in a little while the money is in your account. most jobs offer direct deposit (side-stepping checks in favor of depositing salary directly into the employee's bank account, as you've said), but it's still not the norm, for reasons unknown to me (less bank trips for me, the better). i've never been in the employer position, but checks don't have to be handwritten haha, they can be filled out electronically to speed things up.

i totally forgot about the service charge (been a while since i've had to deposit a check in euros!), but it's the same here as you've said it is in Finland. if you try to deposit a check in a foreign currency at your bank, you've got to pay a service charge.

i don't know about international wire transfers, but if there's fees, that clears everything up! paying for wire transfer vs. writing a check for free? it's a hassle for you, but nothing for them. unless they pay a fee when you deposit it? ugh, i feel like i'm arguing with myself.

but yeah, bottom line, i love paperless banking/direct deposit/debit cards. i think most people my age would agree.

on the whole check thing... idk tohis i think you're kinda a bit off about the whole check/online banking thing in America. in my impression anyway, checks aren't that popular here (though i'd imagine you're right that they're much more popular here relative to Europe). most people i know (certainly my whole family and most of my friends) have online banking and use cards or cash before thinking about writing a check. also in many businesses you'll see signs saying "no personal checks, please," 'cause there's always the risk that the check might bounce.

personally, i've written maybe... 5 checks in the past two years. i get them occasionally, but usually only in like... cards (if it's an amount larger than $10-$20), or as money from companies/entities (like when my scholarship/loan amount was more than the cost of tuition i got a check for the remaining money from my uni). when i get paid from jobs, i have a direct deposit set up so it just goes straight to my bank and i use it via online banking/card/etc. basically i agree with what banane said. lol

i think you realize that the purpose of a check is basically the same as a debit/credit card, except used before we had the plastic! lol enough people use it that it's still accepted as a form of payment, though really i think even in the US it is severely declining in popularity, at least with younger people.

i think the major plus side of using a check today is that you don't have the same risk of identity theft or someone trying to hack your bank account. like you know there's still check-related fraud and you do risk losing or misplacing the check, but i think as a whole the damage is a lot more limited--just losing the amount on the check rather than a large chunk of your bank account!

in terms of checks used for paychecks, you get the check--usually if it's from an employer it will actually be printed/generated from a computer system and not handwritten--and then you have to take it to your bank. once you take it to your bank, you can either cash it and get cold hard cash for it, or you can fill out a deposit slip to deposit it and the money is added to your account. i have a weird bank where there are very few physical locations so when i get a check i actually have to mail it to them (with a deposit slip ofc) in order to deposit it. so, obviously i usually can't get cash from my checks, only deposit them.

i get the impression that a lot of people sign up for direct deposit (like me!) where it goes from their employer directly to their bank account, just because collecting the check, then traveling to your bank just to cash/deposit it is such a hassle...

I saw them on October 2010 as well and my experience was pretty much what you just said. The performance was awesome, but the crowd was meh. I did get spit on by Rifo though, pretty gross and cool at the same time.
