View Full Version : Mass-producing helmets

I emailed through Alterian Inc, who are responsible for the helmets in Electroma, as well as the doll in the Technologic video, and basically asked about the helmets, the design & manufacturing process etc.

This is part of the reply I got....

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

There have been A LOT of inquiries as to whether or not there are versions of the Daft Punk robot masks for sale. The band has recently been discussing the idea of manufacturing a "Halloween mask" version of the robot helmets for the public, and designs and prototypes are in progress.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

So there you go. And the Daft Club is where you read it first!!!

actuly, daftpunks helmets were made by a company named led, and to get an official helmet u have to pay 60,000 dollars and writtin permison from daft punk. But, the halloween masks would be pretty cool, but i want to manufacture my own using a motercyacle helmet and other material =]

!happy !!!! F*CKING AWESOME !!! I'M GONNA BUY BOTH KICKASS HELMETS !!! !guy-man

You should submit this, so that the Admin can post it. I mean, these could be considered news right?

Well, the HAA era helmets don't have LED effects, so another company could easily make the helmets.

I just hope the "halloween" helmets are not the crappy kind; you know, like all freaking masks that only cover your face, not the back of your head. I want helmets like the ones extras were wearing in Electroma ;)

To be factual, LED Effects provided just that - the LED effects which were for the Discovery era costumes. Read their site properly and they state that the helmets were casted and chromed by a different company, they only provided the LEDs for them. And they dont cost $60,00 nor can they be purchased by the public, even if you are the Queen of Sheba. I only know all of this thanks to many hours of emailing, researching etc

Anyway, I was referring to the helmets used in Electroma, which were made by Alterian Inc, hence my reason for contacting them.

Great news:)

So mabey having a haloweon mask of dp would be the best we would ever be able to get??

Well, well, it didn't take Guyman and Thomas long to become "Americanized." Before they were saying that helmets were of superior quality and that they wouldn't sacrifice their artistic intregity to mass produce them cheaply like "Star Wars" masks. If this deal goes through, the Daft Punk invasion of "American Suburia" is coming soon than we thought. LOL.

Well, who says it has to be a cheapo thing.
It could be one of these expensive masks you find in pro costume shops or simply sell it online alone.
Maybe $100 or $150 for each...
But I'd settle for a cheap plastic thing if it looks descent :D

boutboulman

Maybe they are just giving up under the level of demand. I don't really DP sacrificing much as regards to integrity.
Or maybe that place told an untruth to bladez just to get rid of him!
Personally for me it's make your own, get the real thing (nop) or go without.

EDIT: I realised that if you haven't Electroma, SPOILER!

And just when we are all wearing are Thomas and Guy-Manuel masks, those two will decide that they wish to be human after all, but in a cruel twist of fate, after having had a latex operation in a secret room, we shun them, forcing them to ru- walk really really really really slowly accross the desert, you know, till they decide they can't take it anymore.

Help save Daft Punk by not buying a mask!!!

Or wear those black bags over their heads like they did with the Electroma interview, I prefer the clown masks from their Homework days, hillarious stuff.

maybe it'll be a limited production of helmets, like the 12" figures. interstella figures, HAA remixes, Bape shoes etc.

No need for apologies mate, I'm only sharing something that I hadn't seen mentioned anywhere else. Perhaps Alterian Inc are lying, but if thats the case, why mention prototypes and designs? A simple "We are making a mask" would have been ok if it wasn't true. Only time will tell I guess.

I don't see how it can be viewed as becoming a sell out doing this. Surely doing TV spots for Gap and Premini are more akin to selling out than this.

At the end of the day, they have a brand not too dissimilar to rock band Kiss - they have a unique image and would be wise to market it in a way to keep the money coming in - it's called the music 'business' for a reason.

For example, why do you think HBFS is going to be the next single? Clever marketing, thanks to Kanye raising DP's profile with his "Stronger" single.

I don't care if it happens or not, but if it does, you can be sure I'll be getting some for myself ;)

futureproof
4th Sep 2007, 12:55
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that they chose the HBFS because of Kanyes song, which may be the smart thing to do.
Personally, it's not my favorite part of the show, but it's all good.
It's simply a way to promote the album, the way Something About Us was done to promote Interstella (which might as well be the 5th single for Discovery).

If they've only ever done two adverts maybe they only did it for companies they liked. It' possible that then or even now they were big fans of gap clothing. Or it was a good business thing I suppose, I had never thought about the single release like that, but it sounds believable. A very good part of the show to introduce others to it though in my opinion.

4th Sep 2007, 18:33
they also did a commercial for iTunes! don't forget about that one! (they didn't actually appear, but whatever...)

anyway... i wasn't too big a fan of the announcement, either, but then again i wasn't ever interested in owning a mask to begin with.

as with almost everything else, the fewer of something there are, the cooler and more desirable it becomes; mass~production's going to take a little of the "coolness" away.

but i suppose we should see what comes of this before passing jugdement...

godiecool
4th Sep 2007, 22:09
Even though I agree a lil' bit with piroteki, they'll still be awesome. I mean, do we love Daft Punk because they're robots? No !!! We love Daft Punk for their music. Sure, the whole robot thing is cool and all, but we love them for their music !!!

You guys are saying this now, but I bet you'll be the first to buy both helmets if they come out ;)

I won't be the first, nor the last. trust me. It's like taking Scrooge Mcduck's lucky dime and mass producing it, it won't be special anymore. And just the thought of Scrooge doing something like that puts a large question mark on top of our heads (Disney fans will know what I'm talking about :P ).

Sorry if that sounded corny, but I couldn't think of any other way to explain it. XD

I know there are a million threads about helmets, but this subject just really needs to at least be discussed.

Are they ever going to start mass-producing realistic, plastic versions of the Daft Punk helmets? Not the big "Light Show" helmets with the crazy wiring. Like, the helmets they used in Electroma. I know there were a lot, and I want ti know how they got so many. Surely, if Daft Punk's company got enough money together, they could probably start making helmets similar to the ones in the movie.

dowzerr
3rd Jan 2008, 01:46
Yes they could. But will they?
There must have been at least 20 or so made for Electroma. But DP kept em all it seems as none have cropped up on eBay etc.

Hance why I'm gonna try and make one.
I've actually just emailed Busy P about an hour ago to ask if they'll ever be released.

piroteki
3rd Jan 2008, 01:48
it was reported a couple months ago (like a week or so before Halloween, in fact) that one company (i think the one that did all their special effect stuff?) was going to be producing cheap Halloween~esque replica helmets, but when someone asked about it on the live chat with Daft Punk on Nov 27th, Thomas said that there were no plans, if i remember correctly.

"HUMAN"
3rd Jan 2008, 02:00
it just seems unlikely, daft punk always seem to shy away from the limelight, and this would in effect be the complete opposite. no matter how those helmets would be marketed, either mass or bespoke production, theres no way the media would allow it to slip past without articles popping up left right and centre about it.

DJPixcell
3rd Jan 2008, 02:05
This was discussed before..

I would LOVE for them to make a cheap version of the helmets..

But the thing is, Daft Punk is who they are today, because of those helmets. When you think Daft Punk, you think of those 2 awesome silver, and gold helmets.

As much as I would like for them to be released, I doubt that they will put them in production.

It would only lose that thrill of seeing those helmets when you finally did see them, in concert or movies, etc.

As much as I would like it, I hope they don't.

Only because I don't want to lose that thrill. ;)

I'm in the same boat, while it would be awesome to have, I rather see them now do it, it's just part of who they are. Besides, what are we gonna do with them, wear them around all over? Halloween? Pfft.

Meanwhile, it looks like they WERE using LCD jackets. I've known about those before Daft Punk used em, and I still want one!

http://enlighted.com used to make LCD jackets, I think, I kinda hope they still do, they make LED jackets. Just think tron, and you're close to how it'd look in the dark. :P They're sweet.

Update: I just found Enlighted's myspace and Daft Punk is on it's Top 8. I'm pretty sure that's where the jackets were made.

17th May 2009, 01:49
the helmets are great and it would be a bit of a let down to know that anyone could just pick one up... but then i think about what a kick *** costume it would make and if they ever did mass produce them id def. be one of the first to buy one :D

17th May 2009, 02:37
I think it would ruin it if anyone could get hold of a proper helmet, but the masks would be the flimsy plasic things wouldn't they, so I don't think I'd be one to rush and buy one tbh.
I'd rather try (and prolly fail) to make my own.

RobotAfterAll

I would pay $60,000 just to get something personally written from Daft Punk.

Do you think they let their sons wear them? Those would be the coolest kids on the block. Their probably so heavy that they would fall over....

I wonder if they need a babysitter...hmmm....

I've come to the conclusion that I will NEVER own one of the official helmets. Even as a child counselor (my career goal) $60,000 seems out of this world. I'd love to meet the person who decides to buy one, though. I'd pay them $100 just to hold it.

Excuse me if I am wrong, but I have heard in several places that DP copyrighted their helmets. If that's true, then it's seriously doubtful that the general public would ever be allowed to buy them. Even if we are, they would probably cost ALOT. For one, every single DP fan would probably buy one, maybe even two. Also, I can't imagine that they are exactly cheap to make, unless they just make little latex face masks.

its not really the helmets, but it says on the Enlightened DP Alive Encore page that they won't remake Daft Punk's Alive 2007 encore suits. they do not want you to "ask for a suit with the minimum amount of changes".

20th Jul 2010, 03:56
I thought we put this subject to bed in another thread?

When they said "Halloween type masks" they meant paper ones like the kind you cut out of the back of Cereal boxes. They gave them out in Australia at an Alive concert, and only there. I have a few I snagged off eBay.

In my opinion I doubt we will ever see Daft Punk sell replicas of their helmets, so I would not hold out much hope for that.
