My dislike for RAM is already well-documented, but this track is a serious gem. Weird wet noise aside. The track that makes me wonder what RAM could've been if DP hadn't sought to cram so many collaborators onto the album. What it could've been if they hadn't thought that putting Thomas' vocodered to hell voice on more than one track was a good idea.
Thoughts?

today i received my copy and now i do the first listening. at the end of "the game of love" though i can definitely hear a laughter. it's at around the last 3 seconds. why is that? imho it shouldn't be there. may it be intended? you can hear it best with headphones (mine are the in ear iems atomic floyd superdarts) and high volume obviously.

any thoughts?

edit: i cut out the last 8 seconds, looped them for 2 times, turned up the volume and used the amplify effect. noise/noise/clipping warning!

It occurs to me that there are probably a great many people here who are unaware of what Random Access Memory (RAM) is, in general, from which Daft...

It occurs to me that there are probably a great many people here who are unaware of what Random Access Memory (RAM) is, in general, from which Daft Punk gets the title of the album. This is a simple "For Dummies!" style explanation from a computer science major for ordinary humans.

In computers, there are generally two basic types of electronic memory: Read Only Memory (ROM) and Random Access Memory. (RAM) Read Only Memory is somewhat of a misnomer, since it gets written to, but that's the name of it anyhow. ROM would include the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) which would be the bits of code that live on the motherboard and just have enough information to give the computer it's first instructions when it turns on to check all the devices that are connected. All those words that quickly fly past when you turn a computer on are output from the BIOS.

After the BIOS, the computer goes looking for more instructions to follow, usually in the form of an OS (Operating System like Windows, Mac OS or Linux) stored on a hard disk. The files on your computer (on the C: drive for most PC users) are usually on your hard drive. When you see the Windows logo on a PC then that means the computer has found the hard drive and is running code from it. If it doesn't find the hard drive then you wouldn't see the Windows logo: you'd instead see a message from the BIOS like, "No hard drive detected."

All your documents, music, programs etc. that you can browse on the computer are in what's usually called "storage media", like the hard drive.

So, if that's ROM then what's RAM then? Well, RAM is memory that the computer can write to and read from much more quickly than ROM or storage, which the computer uses as a temporary buffer to be able to do the tasks you give it. Say, for example, you are using a word processor. You open a document file and type a sentence, then close the word processor without saving. The sentence isn't made part of the document file because you didn't save. But where was the sentence while you were typing, if it wasn't part of the document file? The answer is, at least on an ultra-simplified level, in RAM.

It may be helpful to think of Random Access Memory as being like the computer's short-term memory. Many times, when you see a "Loading" screen or your cursor is an hourglass, it means the computer is busy moving data from storage to RAM for quick access. What happens when the computer has so much work to do that the RAM is full? Well, in that case, the computer will move the relatively-less-immediate information to the hard drive, and call that "Virtual Memory." Virtual Memory is always much slower, so you can often get old computers to do work faster by upgrading the RAM, since that gives the computer more room to store all that temporary data while it's working and that will enable it to rely on Virtual Memory less of the time.

One of the notable things about Random Access Memory is that it only stays present while the computer is turned on. Only as long as the computer actually has electricity running through it does what's in RAM survive. As soon as the computer is unplugged or switched off, everything that is in RAM is wiped out. This is why you are encouraged to save your work so often. It puts what you've typed in storage so that it will still be there next time you turn the computer on.

A really silly thing about copyright law, which most politicians don't understand, is that in the world of computers, every single operation usually involves making a copy of a file. When you play an mp3, information gets copied from storage to RAM in order to play the file, and whether the mp3 was legally obtained or not makes no difference. It is therefore extremely silly for copyright law, in the digital age, to be written in terms of "copies." "Distributions" might be a better way to think of copyright restrictions.

This overview of how computers work also applies to most cell phones, tablets, game systems etc. All of those are "computers" under the hood in some sense, despite their differences.

So, whatever meaning you try to glean from the title of the album, at least now you have the backing in how computers work.
