Love this site, I'm really impressed with everybodies builds. I'm glad I came across this, I'm having a lot of fun working on my own helmet.

Anyhow, I started working on this about a month ago. I took some java programming in college, so, this started off easy. But I can't seem to figure out how to get relatively complex things to scroll nicely. Like tekparasites scrolling arrows "< < <" or simply scrolling Text. It sort of stutters.

This is what I've done on my own so far.... A lot of it was implemented with the use of arrays:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9Ha4T8MLJs
**Edit: if you watch the vid, the first animation is supposed to be slow at first, lol, i tried to make it look like its booting up.

Any leads on how to get the more complex stuff scrolling nice and smooth?

Thanks!

Hi! I've been wanting a Thomas helmet for a while now and I'm running into a problem with the sizing. I'm 5' 10", 240 lbs, so I'm a pretty big guy. I tried on my friend's Firewire casting and it was really small on my head and didn't look right with my body's dimensions.

I want to get Beastman/MoguaiProps helmet, but I'm unsure if that will fit better on me or not. Does anyone have a comparison of all the Thomas helmets or at least some who's similar to my size can give me a recommendation?

Right now, I'm leaning towards Volpin's helmet as it looks like has the best proportions for me, IMO.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Daft Punk fans,

I'm looking to rent a couple helmets for a music video parody that I'm shooting for my YouTube channel. Preferably, the really cool ones with the built in LEDs.

I would be willing to either rent them, or if you sell them and this is your business, give you a plug at the end of the video and drive massive traffic to your Daft Punk helmet business. My last music video parody has nearly 10 million views, so as you can imagine, it could be very lucrative if sell them: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Znpt_Umixcs

If anyone would be work with me on this, I'd really appreciate it. I'm planning on shooting the video in Los Angeles next week, and we may have cameos by Cheech and Chong, so if anyone is a stoner or marijuana activist, please help a brother out!

Cheers!
Steve

Hey guys,

Ok so I have been struggling for nearly a week now on Pepakura 3. I managed to get a virtual machine to work on my 2008 macbook, running Xp, and Pepakura, but once i scaled up the files, it was nearly impossible to rotate/cut the bigger pieces so they would fit onto the paper in the 2D layout... It has been an absolute nightmare :( And all my mates all use bloody Apple (first time I ever wished i had a Windows computer over an Apple, but lets not start that debate)..

So, I was wondering, would anyone like to make a quick buck in helping us get these larger pieces, onto the paper print layour, so we can begin the printing process?

Thanks again guys!

Here's a quick ''how to'' for installing a Guy-Man visor internally. Or at least how i do it... For the purpose of this tutorial i'll be using an Onyx cast as that's the only test cast i was willing to cut in half. So where do we begin?

Firstly it's important to take your time and not rush this part of your build. It's not especially difficult to do but you should take your time and be methodical about where you make your cuts. With some patience and a steady hand you'll have yourself a nicely inset visor in an afternoons work. Also most issues can be fixed with a little epoxy and/or bondo should you cut too deep etc , so don't panic and freak out if you think you've made a mistake somewhere.

These are the tools that you'll need to inset your visor. A Dremel with these 3 attachments, the cutting disc, the sanding drum, and the detailing file. One pair of SHARP kitchen scissors.

PART 1. Trimming the Chassis

First things first. Put the visor itself to one side. We start work on the helmet chassis before anything else.

Now using Dremel and the cutting disc remove the main visor piece from the helmet. Get as close to edge of the helmet as you dare. Chances are unless your a helmet builder then this is your one and only cast, so be careful. If you don't think you have too steady a hand then err on the side of caution and cut as close as you're comfortable with. You can sand this edge closer with the sanding drum once you have the most of the visor cut out. Once the visor is out swap to the sanding drum and carefully sand the rest of the excess resin till you have a nice flush edge. Don't worry if it's not too pretty, this will be filled with bondo later. Here's the visor section removed (also this is my cross section helmet, it's much easier to show what i'm doing with only half a helmet)

Ok next we need to cut the edge for the visor so sit onto. Load up the cutting disc again in the Dremel for this part. The cutting disc will give us a nice clean edge to the lip. It's actually pretty easy to get a nice even line all the way around the inside of your helmet. i left lip with a depth of maybe 2 to 3mm. You can see here...

Cut this groove all the way around the inside of your helmet

Again get as close as you dare, but be careful you don't go to deep towards the outside of your helmet. There's actually less resin to remove with 65D than the Onyx, but with Onyx it's an idea to hold it upto the light if you think you might be too close. Onyx has a lot of bubbles so if you go too deep you should be able to see through it. Ideally you don't wanna go that far but if you do, don't panic. This can totally be fixed.

At this point your visor would more than likely sit in this groove but there's still too much resin in the way to actually get the visor in in the first place on a full helmet. What we need to do is cut away more of the resin upto the edge of the nice clean groove you have just cut. The detailing file (the bullet shaped attachment) is ideal for this. use it to smooth the resin away so you visor will have room to be pushed into place. This is what you should end up with

Now your visor will have a nice lip to sit in and the visor itself (once trimmed) is flexable enough to push into the helmet from the opening where your head goes. This is what it'll be doing on the inside...

PART 2. Trimming the Visor

Chances are you visor is made from 2mm PETg. PETg can be trimmed fairly easily with a pair of sharp kitchen scissors. You can use a Dremel but the cutting disc will met the plastic and create tiny balls of molten plastic, not nice to get on you. If you have a lot of plastic to cut away around your visor then by all means use a dremel but don't get much closer than about an inch from the visor edge. Use the scissors from then on. you'll have to remove more than you'll expect from your visors edge. Around the sides of mine i've left a lip of as little as 1mm from the actual dome itself with maybe 3 to 4mm at the chin and top bar parts of the visor. The pic below shows just how much i've cut away

The best option is to trim the visor down leaving some trim all the way around and then try pushing it into place. If it's not fitting right, have a look at where you think the problem is and trim a little more visor edge in that place. What is also possible is that you may have to trim more of the chassis rather than the visor. It really depends how well you smoothed the inside of the visor. All casts are different and this approach will get your particular visor sitting into your particular helmet chassis nicely. Here's how it looks from the inside one it's in.

Ok so thats all the pics i have on this computer of that part of the fitting. I will show how to fill the gap between your helmet and visor with bondo so you get that nice clean (and thick RAM style) edge in my next post.

Is this a good deal, I saw the same one for $550 but didn't buy it in time. I need to make a decision as my birthday is on May 22nd, and I was planning on driving around town and making stops at various spots blasting the music on with me Guy Manuel helmet. So should I go for it?

Edit - I take that back, I already bought it!

Hey all,

I have been reading this forum for a while now, but only signed up today... This place really inspired me and my housemate to get a Daft Punk helmet build on the go!

I was wondering if anyone could help with rescaling our helmets in pepakura? I had to install a virtual machine with windows on my macbook in order to get pepakura and have been a little confused by it all :( Its the same with having to PDF the pepakura file so i can bring it to work and print out the card.

Is anyone able to assist at all? It would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks!
