Richard D. James (Aphex Twin, AFX, etc...)11th Jul 2009, 23:50 #1
I searched the forum and suddenly realized that we have no topic for my second favourite artist of all time, so i decided to make one.
Richard D. James is the amazing guy behind Aphex twin, AFX, Blue Calx, Bradley Strider, Caustic Window, DJ Smojphace, GAK, Martin Tressider, Polygon Window, Power-Pill, Prichard D. Jams, Q-Chastic, Tahnaiya Russell, The Dice Man, and Soit P.P..
He is most well known for Aphex twin and AFX and his original sound that he titled "Braindance". He is known to incorporate elements of breakbeat, classical, and avante guarde sounds into his music.
I personally agree with him about his statement that IDM is a bad descriptor of any genre.
For any of you that havent heard him, i recommend doing so.

His more melodic tracks are rare treats to me. Sometimes his harder stuff is danceable, but other times it's just nasty. Overall I can't say I'm a megafan, but it's hard not to have respect for the man who practically invented IDM.

Musical genius. His sound is so various, yet so recognizable.

Selected Ambient Works Volume 2 is pure genius
I'm impartial to Windowlicker & Come To Daddy too, those alomg with Fenix Funk 5 hold a permanent place in my playlists.
his videos are great to boot, any word on new material from him? I've heard a few rumours

hes a crazy genius, but sometimes i think he goes a little too out of his way to be shocking.when i saw him live last year,he went out of his way for the performance to be frightening and inaccessible.it worked.not sure what it achieved though.

played incredibly loud and repetitive techno music (yes, actual techno, for once not a misuse of the word) which he either hadnt written himself,or had written,in the most deliberately fiendish fashion so that people not off their faces on drugs would hate.he had almost no lightshow, did almost no mixing, and filled the stage with smoke so you couldnt see him.the twin screens on either side of the stage alternated between showed bizarre old foreign movies and porn.
