The "WTF do I call this genre?" thread

Remove this ad: become a supporter
was torn between the lounge and other music, I decided here was best.
as the title says, Genres you can't pin down or can't accept the name of said genre.

for me, right now I'm having trouble pinning down Sebastien Tellier's Sexuality, along with Squarepusher's Go Plastic & Ultravisitor (one genre I have heard for Ultravisitor is "Future Jazz" :S)

and as for ones I don't like, first off is what I read for Invaders Must Die by The Prodigy, which I saw listed as "Electro-Punk". It's just straight up Electro in my book.

Secondly is Aphex Twin, who is credited as IDM (Intelligent Dance Music) which sounds too pretentious for my liking or "Braindance", which was coined by aphex twin himself, albeit whilst making fun of the term IDM.
So I just list most of it as Aphex Twin (minus Analord & Classics, which is Acid House)
I do the same for daft punk, where it is all listed as daft punk, minus homework, which I have down as House

we did not choose to become robots. there was an accident in our studio. we were working on our sampler, and at exactly 9:09 a.m. on september 9, 1999, it exploded. when we regained consciousness, we discovered that we had become robots.

yeah, I have house under one label
And electro pop sounds silly too, at least synthpop makes sense!
I checked out Tellier, and I'm getting "R&B/Swing", "Chanson" (what is that?) "Downtempo" & "Electro"
    it's more electronica really

Chanson is basically a term for "it's French music" (it literally means "song" in English) but really, i don't think that's right... 'cause i tend to think of "Chanson" being like... Édith Piaf, Charles Aznavour, and older artists. maybe yé-yé could count too...

i haven't actually heard the Tellier album aside from Sexual Sportswear, but i think the rest of those terms are applicable.

when i'm tagging genres for my music i usually go with Wikipedia and Discogs.

Genres are so last decade. (Just because I fail at putting tracks or artists to specific genres. Ahaha..ha.)

and for squarepusher, atleast Ultravisitor, I'm getting "IDM" "Experimental" and "Future Jazz"
I'll go for Experimental, Future Jazz & IDM sound silly, plus it's pretty much what the album is, Aphex-esque beats with melodies on a bass guitar :P

another term I don't understand, stemming from Squarepusher & Aphex, Drill 'N Bass.
I suppose it comes from the crazy stuff aphex does with the beats but stil...

what other strange/obscure genres you got?

Synthpop is 80's. Electropop is the 2000's version. You can't call it synthpop, because it's radically different from the likes of A-Ha and Depeche Mode.

This is the rule I live by for all my music. Anything classified as "Electro" or "Dance Pop" or "Electronica/Dance" is changed to "Electronic". Any other term for the genre is offensive to me.
