Making a Setlist for a Rap Obbessed High School

Remove this ad: become a supporter
Me and my friends got a gig playing a school dance later this year, and we realized that in accepting this we have to play 'mainstream' and not just blast Danger and The Bloody Beetroots 24/7

What are some electronic songs that generally appeal to the rap group? I've heard MSTRKRFT plays very well, as well as Daft Punk

Busy P - To Protect and Entertain (Feat. Murs)
Mr. Oizo or Crookers remixes might work too.

Rage Against The Machine - Killing In The Name Of (SebastiAn remix)

The only tracks to come into mind immediately, haha. Other than those, I've no idea: all the rap fans I know tend to like e.g. reggae or dancehall too, and of those genres I know nothing about.

You probably don't want to play downtempo/trip-hop like Porthishead or DJ Krush (Kemuri!), eh? But some real hc hip-hop fans might know (even appreciate) DJ Shadow's Organ Donor. Classic track, ahh.

DJ Mehdi's "Black Black and Black" has a bunch of rap remixes on it (and it was officially given away for free).

As much as i'd like to play those songs, its a school run dance. So the songs have to be edited. I don't think To Protect and Entertain would work, partically the So Me 'Get Naked' Version

Rap obsessed school eh? Crookers remix of Kid Cudi "Day 'N' Nite" goes down well with the rap kids over here in England. Justin Faust's and Mr. Oizo's bootlegs of Missy Elliott are also worth a shout

Here are some ones that your hip-hop school would like.

Pitbull: I Know You Want Me
Black Eyed Peas: Imma Be (amazing song)
    Lady Gaga: Bad Romance
Audio Push: Teach Me How To Jerk
    50 Cent: Baby By Me
    Jay-Z: Empire State Of Mind
    Jay-Z: On The Next One
    Rihanna: Hard
Snoop Dogg: Drop It Like It's Hot
    David Guetta: Sexy Chick
    Kid Cudi: Day N' Nite
    Lil Wayne: A Milli
Lil Jon & The East Side Boys: Get Low

Those are a select few. Now, I don't own most of these songs, but they played most of these songs at my school dance last week and there are edited versions for all of the explicit tracks on iTunes.

    get some mashups.

Bootie has some good ones, and there's always acts like GirlTalk you could get a track or two from.
