Need Help on Music Selection
2nd Aug 2010, 05:31 #1So, in about 2 weeks, I'm playing my best friend's girlfriend's 16th birthday party. I play for 3 hours, and they want mainly Techno, Pop, and Hip-Hop. The parental limits are no obscenities of any sort (f*ck, c*nt, sh!t, ect.), and no innuendo at all.
I've already hammered out about an hour and a half of music, all techno, mostly daft punk and deadmau5. Seriously need some help here with song suggestions, cause I need more diversity in genres and artists.
2nd Aug 2010, 06:05 #2well you could always add in a nice french house mix, like roule and le knight club. If you want more techno stuff though you should check out justice and digitalism.
"I like hammocks, I'm a big fan of hammocks. If you know one thing about me I like hammocks" -DJ A-Trak
2nd Aug 2010, 06:29 #3If this is for a young crowd I suggest like Lady Gaga and that kind of stuff.

2nd Aug 2010, 06:35 #4Agreed. Looking into music without lyrics can really help, since you don't have to worry about all the bad innuendos.
Also, checking out the radio can help as well, but it might be hard to find one without innuendo. Looking for songs that suggest people to only dance instead of "dance and get naughty" would help. It might help to go to the techno station instead.
Some songs 16 year olds might jump around to that I found on my iTunes...
Just Dance - Lady Gaga
Boom Boom Pow, I Gotta Feeling, Rock That Body, Let's Get It Started, Pump It - Black Eyed Peas
Calabria 2007 - Enur Feat. Natasja
Speakerphone - Kylie Minogue
Jump - Madonna
2nd Aug 2010, 10:21 #5Get a chart compilation of 2009/2010, maybe a Ministry of Sound cds. Don't be too original because for the people its always nice to hear familiar tracks. I don't think Waters of Nazareth from Justice is a good one (too many distortion) but Not Exactly is a nice less known track where people think 'damn i want to know that track title!!!'
So go for pop music, dance music with vocals and be careful with french house. I think you can ruin a party with 6 min of spinal scratch. I love the track but its too repetitive for 90%
2nd Aug 2010, 12:21 #6Some dance music:
We No Speak Americano - Yolanda Be Cool & Dcup
Stereo Love - Edward Maya
Getting Over you - David Guetta & Chris Willis
Bonkers - Dizzee Rascal & Armand Van Helden
When Love Takes Over - David Guetta
(I would just go to the Top Dance Chart in the itunes Music Store, to find more of these type of tunes)
2nd Aug 2010, 14:32 #7Some pop: Paramore: Their album Brand New Eyes is good.
Hip-Hop: Gorillaz: Plastic Beach
2nd Aug 2010, 15:15 #8Are you suggesting that Justice and Digitalism is Techno? WUT?
in general I'd suggest something like..
Dj Sammy
Chicane
Zombie Nation
Bob sinclair
Eric Prydz
Underworld
Paul Van Dyk
Storm
Veracocha - Carte Blanche
Brainbug - Nightmare
Darude - Sandstorm
Dark Monks - Insane (Steve Murano Remix) H
Hybrid - Finished Symphony (Maybe even the deadmau5 mix)
Digger - Church of Ra
Tbh, I don't think you friends girlfriend means ACTUAL techno if she's put it with hip hop and pop. Traditionally Techno is a very heavy genre. A lot of what I've suggested here is more trancey stuff, which I think would probably fit in better with the other two genres and they're fairly well known.
If you want some techno, I'd suggest very new stuff, because todays 'Techno' is for pussies, unless you dig real hard
I dunno what else you're wanting, if theres any Electro/House/Drum'n'bass going in there, but HIp-Hop, I can't really help you out on because I don't know enough about it
But definitely play Yolande Be Cool and DCUP - We don't speak Americano... D.E.F.I.N.I.T.E.L.Y!!!
And also this and an obvious choice
