DP used sound from Close Encounters film

At the beginning of Daft Punk's 2007 performance at Lollapalooza they played the sound from the film "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" that humans and aliens used to communicate with each other. Some people have referred to this as "The Whistle Sound". I was at that Lollapalooza performance and didn't make the connection until I watched the movie recently (It just came out on Blu-Ray as a 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition). I think it's pretty cool that Daft Punk now has film connection to the world of The Grid in Tron as well as a connection to aliens in Close Encounters. I'm pretty sure they did that before every performance in the Alive 06/07 tour, and I also think this has been discussed before.

Although, it is pretty cool that Daft Punk pays homage to cult classics every now and then

ok cool. Yeah I did a forum search for "Close Encounters" to see if there was a thread on this and the only thing I found was the "Daft Punk Whistle Sound" thread in the "Resources & How-to's" section where it was guessed what the sound was but not confirmed. Either way, I think it's a cool enough thing that it deserves it's own thread for people that search for it in the future.

I agree with you that it is cool that Daft Punk pays homage to cult films every now and then. Are there films other than Tron and Close Encounters that they have made references to in their music, performances, music videos, etc.?

Just out of interest, the 5 tone sound used in Close Encounters of the Third Kind was in James Bond Moonraker 2 years later.
I don't know why.
