"What's Up? - Daft Punk" - ID, December 1995
18th Mar 2012, 21:35 #1In trying to track down the thread for this article, it appears as though I never actually posted it in this forum (I had put it in the picture thread originally.) So without having to go through hundreds of pages to find it, I'll just repost it...
Here is a very early little blurb about the boys and where they were before they signed with Virgin and put out Homework. Thomas talks about the negative review of Darlin' from Melody Maker, and why they chose to take on Daft Punk as their name (which is actually pretty anticlimactic... typical.) They mention that even then, Roule was established and Thomas was preparing to release Trax On Da Rocks, Vol. 1. Jeez, I didn't know it was from that long ago. And of course there is a rather adorable pic included. I won't say anything about Guy-Man wearing a girl's letter jacket (who is Carol anyway?) other than maybe it's just due to his diminuitive stature
Anyway, if you already downloaded this article before, this version is a rescan. I'm going to be doing this a lot in the next several weeks with old articles, so I apologize in advance if it gets annoying.

21st Mar 2012, 01:35 #8Yeah, I had trouble reconciling new jack swing with house because they're really different kinds of music. New jack swing is, like, TLC and En Vogue and Soul for Real (ah, how I miss the music of '94 & '95.) Maybe new jack in terms of electronic music is different?

21st Mar 2012, 02:27 #9In simple terms, New Jack Swing is like poppy 90's R&B with significant influences from house music (especially in terms of the types of synth sounds used). Think along these lines:
It's pretty awesome.
Anyways, back on topic! I'm not really sure why they used the term to describe DP, their use of it was probably closer to your original interpretation.
Re: "What's Up? - Daft Punk" - ID, December 1995
21st Mar 2012, 03:56 #10I believe this was DP's point - new jack swing is generally very technically simple, it's not very "produced." When a track is done, it's done. It doesn't need all the "bells and whistles" of your typical 100-track pop song. DP seem to like this philosophy and how it aligns with their own music. So it's not that the styles are the same, it's that the way of thinking is the same or similar.
