Downloading .rar files. Help?
7th Apr 2012, 01:52 #1So I'm trying to get some RAR video files downloaded. So I installed Unrar for Windows. From here, I'm totally lost. The interface of the program itself is confusing, And when I began the dowload of the file (using Chrome btw) it gives me the option to find a program with which to open the file. I'll click on "Unrar for Windows"...and this is what I get.

Do I try selecting one of the extensions? Seems kinda sketchy.
This is what the program looks like when I open the file manager via Start menu:

Anyways, anyone familiar with .rar files? And perhaps better software for extracting them? Thanks, and I apologize for being a n00b. I really have no idea what the hell I'm doing when it comes to dealing scccurrrrryy foreign filetypes.

Re: Downloading .rar files. Help?
7th Apr 2012, 02:26 #5Ok it's a little more straightforward, but I attempted several times to extract using the wizard, and it wants me to create a multivolume archive and tells me to insert a disk with this volume, paraphrasing of course. I canceled the extraction, and after a couple of times...WinRar crashed. I am getting slightly annoyed.
If it's of any relevance these are the files I'm trying to extract: [link removed]Last edited by piroteki; 10th Apr 2012 at 14:34. Reason: illegal link removed
Re: Downloading .rar files. Help?
7th Apr 2012, 02:29 #6Usually when you download the rar file and go to it on your hard drive, you should be able to right click it and have the option to extract the archive using the software you installed. But I'm not familiar with Unrar. However, I use a program called 7-Zip and that's how it works.
This is why I prefer .zip files

7th Apr 2012, 02:32 #8Yes, .zips are so much easier. Don't need no other software for that. I'll try that now.
EDIT: Ok I tried extracting the file via the program menu, but to no avail...could it have something to do with the filesize? It's about 220 Megabytes...kinda big, but I don't see how it would be overly large.Last edited by n00b Tr00per; 7th Apr 2012 at 02:37.
Re: Downloading .rar files. Help?
7th Apr 2012, 02:39 #9Ok here is the "solution". Since winRAR should be automatically assigend to .rar files simply download all the parts, double click on part 1 (!). There should be the folder popping up that shows you what is inside the (split) archive. Then simply grab the file and drag it to your desktop. After that just click on the file you extracted (because it's a .zip in the .rar file) and extract the .mp4 file that is in there. Should be as simple as that.

7th Apr 2012, 02:50 #10Yes, it should be. It won't show me the split archive, it just tries to extract eveything and then after a few seconds it prompts me to insert a disk.
gee you must be feeling like one of those tech support guys right now and at first I typed "dick" instead of "disk" I want to continue being mad at technology but I am too amused
