Anyone else touched by Interstella 5555?
25th Apr 2012, 01:01 #1I was given my first informal introduction with DP through watching Interstella 5555.
Oh man. I was sober the first time I watched it and it was still so touching and emotionally powerful to me.
Anyone else feel the same way?
Made me change my outlook on life.

It is a highly emotive film, all the more impressive for its lack of dialogue. They took a story that was essentially an allegory about the record industry and made an incredible adventure out of it, complete with action, intrigue, heartbreak, and some absolutely stunning animation. It's what really convinced me to look into them as a group.

My friends and I like to see how many fives we can say before the teacher starts speaking, class is over, etc.

25th Apr 2012, 03:10 #5I found it about as amusing and cheesy as I find most anime.
Electroma carried a stronger message for me.

Re: Anyone else touched by Interstella 5555?
25th Apr 2012, 04:52 #7I loved both Interstella 5555 and Electroma. Most people can grasp Interstella 5555 and thoroughly enjoy it. Electroma as much as I love it, can be hit and miss with most people in my experience. My sociology prof loved it in more doctoral ways than I will ever comprehend, I just can't find the right words!
I would concur that Interstella 5555 was first introduction to DP and I saw it in my later years in Middle School, but since have been hooked. Most of my Army buddies love dancing to them too, so I am slowly spreading the DP gospel to my unit hah.Remember, only Imperial Stormtroopers are so precise... and many Bothans died to bring you this post! www.facebook.com/9336industries

25th Apr 2012, 06:04 #9I actually like electroma a lot more than 5555. I don't know why, either. I guess i'm weird that way.
Re: Anyone else touched by Interstella 5555?
25th Apr 2012, 13:44 #10I feel the same way. Some of the first DP images I saw were clips from Interstella, but I made a much stronger emotional connection when I saw Electroma for the first time. There is a pretty good story in Interstella: I think Shep's romance with Stella and his dedication to saving the band are a little 2-dimensional, but I do give them credit for giving Earl de Darkwood a little more depth than being a bad guy who is evil just 'cause. I enjoy Interstella, but it doesn't do much for me other than enhance the experience of listening to Discovery. If you take away the music, the film loses its potency.
But Electroma stands on its own since they made it apart from their music. The existing music only gives you brief glimpses into the emotions, and there's no dialogue to boot. Undoubtedly, you're going to feel alienated by it, so the film requires its audience to get involved to come to an understanding. Some people will just decide they don't like the film because of this and dismiss it, but others will go the distance until they feel they get it. It didn't take very long for me to get Electroma: if not the first, then definitely by the second time, and each subsequent viewing has been about enjoying it and uncovering more and more. I think this is why it has resonated more with me.
