Anyone else touched by Interstella 5555?

I saw Interstella before I saw Electroma. I was blown away by both. I've never found anything that could ever possibly match Daft Punk music and style. I am completely astonished by way they make everything come together in such a compelling way. Daft Punk is amazing. Hopefully one day I will see them with my own eyes before I leave this world.

I kind of agree with Bison. Interstella was great, but I kind of found it a bit cheesey. I guess I watched so much YuGiOh! and Pokemon and stuff when I was younger that the cartoon style didn't feel so amazing I guess, but it did remind me of being younger, which is what the point of Discovery was. I think I appreciate Electroma much more..Live action, shot by Thomas and everything. You can kind of switch off and watch it and immerse yourself in the alien world it creates. Hmm..I don't know. I had some confusion about the story of Interstella at the end, like, when they go into the cave and the mansion and read the book and stuff, and it shows the kid falling into the vat and stuff..I didn't really get what was happening there. And the end where Darkwood comes back as the smoke monster from lost was just pointless.

It basically shows that he had been kidnapping aliens for hundreds of years, turning them into human superstars, then sacrificing them to get his gold records. I think the kid is either supposed to be Mozart or a representation of Mozart.

I enjoy Interstella, but it doesn't do much for me other than enhance the experience of listening to Discovery. If you take away the music, the film loses its potency.

But that's the point! It's the experience of listening to the album transformed into a story (quite literally at the end)!
I also prefer it because it's a much more accessible film. It has an equally potent message about the dehumanizing nature of the music industry, but whereas it takes a certain type of person to sit through a movie about two robots getting thrown out of a town and walking through a desert of vagina-dunes until they decide to kill themselves, pretty much anyone can watch a fun-filled, disco-tinged anime adventure about an alien rock band getting kidnapped by an evil record producer. I'm of the opinion that you're more likely to get your message across if people actually have fun reading/listening to/otherwise "experiencing" your work. I refer to this Roget Ebert quote, originally about architecture but equally applicable here:

Form should follow function. There is nothing more futile than an architect whose designs seek to redefine the ways that people naturally want to sit on a bench, or look at a skyline. By the same token, in many parks the paved pathways follow the paths that people were following before they were paved. It's human nature. People don't walk on the grass just for the hell of it. They tend to do it only when it obviously makes sense.

Also, in reference to SA's confusion about the nature of Earl de Darkwood's plot, here's a quote from me circa 2008:

My guess in that respect is that the 5555 gold records acted as a form of conductor. They show throughout the Veridis Quo diary that some sort of meteor landed during De Darkwood's childhood, the touch of which turned him evil and made him immortal, seeking only for the full form of the power locked within said meteorite. So he kept it hidden within his home. Every time one of his kidnapped alien artists won a gold record, it would go up on that wall and he would push the artist into the pit below, thus gradually creating both the tool with which he could unlock the power of the meteorite and the energy needed to do it (which came from his slain artists). With the 5555th record, all he needed to release the energy of the meteor was Stella.

Perhaps not, but it has a definite plot and message nonetheless. Earl de Darkwood seeks power by exploiting the talents of others; he's essentially a supervillain version of the record industry.
