Thomas FIREWIRE Helmet
11th May 2012, 15:26 #1Hey guys!
Been wanting to create a helmet for a long long time now, here is my FIREWIRE Thomas cast that came through this morning!

Needless to say I am beyond happy with it. Really couldn't recommend him highly enough, amazing and friendly guy. Plus, the cast is just perfect.
Anyway, I don't hang around. Within an hour of getting it I've already had it shipped to the chromers! It's being Vacuum Metalized here in the UK.
Of course I will update this as soon as it is done, I still need to heat bend and tint the visor.

11th May 2012, 16:07 #2hey man, if thats a resin helmet then i'd put a stop on the vac metal process. Vac metalizing will try and pull any air bubbles out of the resin and could potentially warp your helmet. Volpin had this issue when he tried vac metalizing his Guy Man and i'd hate to see you ruin one of those beautiful Firewire lids...

11th May 2012, 16:21 #3hey! thanks for the heads up, I remembered reading that a whole ago actually but forgot.
I've shot the place an email. Luckily I sent them the ear pieces un attached which they are aware of, so I've suggested they test one of them before doing the full helmet!
I will add though that their website states:
Fast turnaround is out speciality including a SAME DAY Service on some parts.
We offer services to the Rapid Prototyping and model making industries which include mirror finishes on to these materials and many others-
SLS/SLA Models
Resin Castings and Fibreglass
Chemiwood/Modelboard
Plastics and Metals
as you can see that includes resin casts so I would have thought they have dealt with this kind of thing before.
I'll keep you posted.
EDIT: also to add, in my initial email I told them exactly what it is made of.

11th May 2012, 16:56 #4Cool mate, thought it was worth mentioning cause it'd be a crying shame to ruin a firewire lid. It'll also be good to get the name of a decent chrome shop here in the uk. I'm looking to find a good one myself. Will keep and eye on the progress...

11th May 2012, 22:57 #7You had it shipped within an hour to the chromers????I've had a volpin cast for four months and I haven't done jack squat with it!
Anyway, really looking forward to the build. I think that I actually like Firewire's thomas The best out of any other maker.....something about it. And his pulls are super clean.
Maybe this summer I'll get one.

12th May 2012, 10:45 #9Thanks guys, have to say. I was blown away when I opened it up.. I think Firewire really nailed the size and everything!
Will keep you all posted, should be with the Vacuum Metalizers monday and they said it'll take around 2 days.
Re: Thomas FIREWIRE Helmet
12th May 2012, 13:34 #10just another note, I've been searching all over the internet. RPF forum etc and can find no record of Volpin ever actually having Vacuum Metalising done? All I can find is that he planned to have it done and the place ripped him off so he had it sent somewhere else before they even done it.
