"Lucky Man" - Muzik, January 1999
28th Jul 2012, 08:32 #1You've probably seen this article on the forum before (heck if I can remember where it's posted tho.) But in case you haven't, this one finds Thomas reflecting on the strangeness of the year 1998, with the unexpected stellar successes of "Music Sounds Better With You" and "Gym Tonic." The other 2/3 of Stardust, Benjamin Diamond and Alan Braxe, also share their sentiments. I really like how Alan describes "Music Sounds Better With You" as "a very complicated process of simplification," because the song started out much more complex, and instead of filling it out, they worked to strip it down into something very sparse and simple.
Unfortunately the latter song, "Gym Tonic," was a source of stress for Thomas as he originally never intended to release it because was a problem getting Jane Fonda to approve a sample from one of her workout programs, which formed the basis of the song. But the sample eventually cleared and Bob Sinclar put it out. Later on it was parroted by Spacedust (not even trying to go for subtlety there) as "Gym and Tonic." Thomas says that he was "very disappointed" by the whole ordeal, but more or less shrugs it off saying that he doesn't "want to become over-paranoid, thinking that everybody's trying to abuse my goodwill."
And of course, this is also the article where we see Thomas wearing that costume that's very WAT while holding a keytar that is also very WAT... except now it's in high res (and I am so very sorry, I'll never forgive myself.)

11th Aug 2012, 21:06 #4I've actually had this article for a long time as well, but someone else had scanned it (I have no idea who.) But it is a really good one. There aren't very many articles about Thomas or Guy-Man individually, and if there are, usually they're about Thomas (I think I have 1 short article just about Guy-Man, haha.) Lately I've taken to searching for articles by magazine and year rather than straight up searching for Daft Punk, because people don't always mention a magazine's contents in the description. I've found a lot of good articles this way that I wouldn't have otherwise been able to get (including this one,) unfortunately you do have to know exactly which issue you're looking for.

As a side note, since you're awesome at having and finding DP interviews, maybe you remember another interview from around this era. I believe it was an interview of both Thomas and Guy (a Daft Punk interview), and it seems like Pedro was there and said one or two things. Also, there was talk of the Stardust and Together copies at the time, with Guy talking about how one of those tracks (possibly the Supermen Lovers' "Starlight" ?) was a ripoff... I remember it being a fairly long interview and, for whatever reason, I kind of wanted to read it again

13th Aug 2012, 08:18 #6I think you mean this one, "Very Disco." It's from 2001, but Guy-Man does grumble about how Modjo's "Lady" is kinda a Stardust ripoff. Thomas modestly disagrees, but Guy-Man is quite insistent.
