In Progress- Guy-Manuel Helmet
15th Aug 2007, 03:41 #1I have been started doing the helmet this week, only in early stages of building the prototype, so I thought I'd show you guys. Comments and criticism welcome. Thanks for looking.

15th Aug 2007, 06:25 #4this is with Sculpy, right?
have you ever worked with it before? just saying because that seems like an awful lot of clay, and from my own previous experience, Styrofoam is NOT a good armature for baking. and it's a pain to remove from the clay before baking because it sticks together.
and make sure to get a nice smooth surface texture to it and/or prepare for lots of sanding.

The reason for the extra amount of clay is because the styro head is quite small. so I had to make the head slightly bigger. It is indeed sculpy, been practicing with it for two years. I began learning how to make helmets for about a year now, I know what you mean about the styro sticking with the sculpy, I coated it so then this wouldn't happen

[/quote1187221584]right, understandable. i figured you had some experience with it because it looks like pretty good craftsmanship.
but this isn't going to be anything life~size that you can actually wear, right? (couldn't see through it anyway, lol)
anyway, what i was saying about the Sculpy and Styrofoam issue was more that during baking my Styrofoam armature actually expanded and cracked most of my pieces (i was making a ball~joint doll; one that has joints at the elbows, knees, hips, shoulder, wrists, etc.)
it ended up being alright, and my problems were probably in part because of my rushed/poor craftsmanship (night before it was due lol), but i'm just saying... be careful, but i'm sure you know what you're doing more than i do. XD
how do you plan on finishing it? i think it would be great if you could like use something metallic. ever tried using goldleaf? (i haven't, but i think it would look awesome.)
oh, and what do you coat the armature with? i have some leftover clay from my past project, and thought about giving it another go. XD
16th Aug 2007, 02:04 #9Well, I suck when it comes to doing this kind of stuff. Still, I have to say that your early prototype is kickass. Keep up the good work. If they turn out OK, would you sell them to fellow daft clubbers? =P

"the "gold" patch the goes across the top needs to be further back I think"
I kinda Agree*
"he seems to be doing the ears inside out too, its weird
-which doesn't make much sense, even if he was making a mold it would not come out right"
also another good point*
