Rumors that Omar Hakim was going to perform with Daft Punk began to fly when the Pearl Drum corporation posted a tweet stating that the drummer was going to be performing on the same date and location as the Grammys. Omar Hakim was one of many session musicians used during the recording of Random Access Memories. It was confirmed that Hakim will be performing with the duo at the Grammys on his website.
Furthermore, a YouTube video was posted last month featuring Hakim talking about his future solo work, the sessions he did on RAM, and the Grammy performance. “This is going to be new for [Daft Punk], to have a band on stage,” Hakim said. “And evidently Stevie Wonder is going to join us on stage, and Pharrell and Nile [Rodgers]”.
In the same video interview Hakim talked about the process Daft Punk went through producing RAM. “They were showing me these riff ideas that were 4 or 8 bars long and they wanted to jam on them for 5 to 10 minutes,” he said. “It was like a live sampling session,” he stated. Afterwards “they put it all together… and constructed this idea,” Hakim said.
You can watch Daft Punk perform on the Grammys Sunday, January 26th at 8/7c on CBS.
