    Starting a Net Label

Remove this ad: become a supporter
I wanted to start a small record label like TuneIn, Get Some! and mau5trap records. I have read a lot about it, but I still haven't really found what I'm looking for. Can anyone help me with the basics of starting a Net Label?

I don't know anything about starting record labels, but I could help you out if you'd like. You know, graphics, web building and what not.

Mainly, you'd need, obviously, a website, a proper website and hosting server. You need to decide if your releases will be free or payware. I guess you might need to also research what kind of restrictions you want on your releases, such as copyright and distribution. Not sure I can help much more, the best person to ask would be Electromatic, aka Zach Bridier.

You should probably try set up accounts for your netlabel on various music and networking websites like Facebook, Soundcloud, Last.fm etc.

If this goes ahead, I'd be happy to release an EP under it since I was planning to release my first EP independently anyway.

Social networking is key. Get some people to start out under you, set up stuff on Facebook, etc.

    Re: Starting a Net Label

    Bump.

A reason why I want to make this label is so that I can keep some of the right to my songs if I ever get signed to a bigger Record Label. I've noticed that Daft Punk and deadmau5 have their tracks "under exclusive license" to their respective labels. Does anyone know how this works and if I can get away with it (so to speak)?

I would be happy to go under your label if it's ok with you. I don't know much about the technical aspects of it though :l
