My first Bucket - Thomas w/Guy in progress!

    Hello Daft Punk Community!

Disclaimer-I am a Stormtrooper by trade, and my realm of propmaking is primarily Star Wars with vac formed armor that I trim and mod to fit me. I love it, and if anyone is interested in the 501st Legion or trying your hand at becoming a Stormtrooper shoot me a PM.

So that said, I don't have much experience in the way of making Daft Punk.

So being reluctant at making Guy from scratch I acquired a Pinksi Guy-Man, and LOVE it. I was hesitant to go from scratch...so I went with a mold and decided to with Thomas as an experiment.

I started with making a Thomas helmet from Pep upwards. Being a perfectionist I will probably buy a cast of it from one of the extremely talented builders here, because mine sucks presently. I am discouraged but I will post some pics of my throw at pep'ing Thomas next weekend when I get home from wonderful Norwich University.

This thread is where I am going to dump my pics and get some feedback from the group. Also I will post how badly my spray painting went; lesson learned...Creations in Chrome is the only to go!

    So a few questions...

    1) Has anyone bought a kit from Plasmodo lately?
    2) Color gels, I am assuming they are the theatrical ones for lights? In Volpin's build they look thicker, I imagine color gels to the thickness of paper. Please correct me if I am in the wrong here...unless those are the things I am exactly looking for.
    3) To make the decals for the chin lights, does anyone have that pdf or file so I can send it in to be made? If not it can be reproduced but I figured shooting here first.
    4) How do you guys attach the Guy-Man visor to the helmet? Hot glue did not work well- at all. I am thinking velcro in strips around the inner rim...but I am left to doubt how to attach the darn thing. What do you guys use?

    Thanks!

    More to come next weekend!

    I will upload some tomorrow...

It will photobucket but it will uploaded! Recently I got a brass powder cast of a M39 (M41)? Scope for my Centurion class E-11. Besides having that, APEX.com has the pieces from real Sterling SMG's used in the originals...the hardest part is getting a real Henglster counter with a eagle...

    Hah! You being daft?

Yeah just parts that go on the gun, but now a full resin cast exists of the entire E-11 piece but I like having heft, and like putting parts together...it'll be cool and accurate when done. But the real treat is Pablo's E-11 (search that on Youtube) it's blaster porn, really.

Oh I am also getting the leather suit made as well, pics when that starts next week will be here periodically too! I will post as much as I can up till April 30 as I can, for after that I get a study abroad at Fort Benning all summer...yay!

Cool, can't wait to see your progress. For attaching the lens to the helmet, I'd recommend double sided 3m tape.

Re: My first Bucket - Thomas w/Guy in progress!

    @Datboy, Hah!

Double sided tape? Cut to fit? Would you line the entire rim or do it in strategic sections? Would the weather strip be too strong (ie used to attach the hand plates to the gloves)?

Hopefully my builds can show people here how NOT to do things, and how to learn from said mistakes! I know I made my fair share...

Re: My first Bucket - Thomas w/Guy in progress!

Now for some promised pics, after a debacle with my phone USB getting recognized and installing driver software and restarts, etc we are good and the pics are on Photobucket.

Also I am 5'7.5" and 160 pounds, in these pictures before I came to Norwich Senior Military College and joined the Army, so height is still the same, but I was heavier by 20 pounds. I say this only because after I get back from OSUT this summer from Fort Benning I will weigh even less and thus my Daft Punk leather suit based off Cathy's (from God Save the Queen's Fashion) great patterns will look different on me versus someone who is 6'2" like Harrison Krix is over at Volpin Props.

Also I will make a COMPLETE list of materials used to make this monster, so if you are ambitious enough it can hopefully serve to guide you and not repeat the STUPID mistakes I made. It won't be comprehensive until I get home next weekend. But know there will be a list of what to get and such.

That out of the way, let's continue.

    Photobucket Albums
    Guy-Man http://photobucket.com/RDBs_DP_GuyMan
    Thomas http://photobucket.com/RDB_DP_Thomas

    Let's start with Thomas.

So my first go at pep went smoothly after I figured out how to cut and fold, believe it or not it took a while to get it, but afterwards it has to be the easiest process I've ever done. So my original idea, make a mask out of Pep, and use a baseball helmet like DaftCasco did. I hunted around for the best, most recent pep files, and Dungbeetle had what I was looking for.

    First Attempt/Plan:
    1) Pep Visor, resin it and attach to skateboard helmet.
    Revisions/Progression
    1) V1 Thomas' visor was too large.
    2) Added back of dome for V1, still much to large on me, and awkard feeling/looking.
    3) Start over, reduced Dungbeetle's stock pep file by 10%, pep the entire bucket
    4) New pep'd Thomas lid becomes V2, and correct size for me, and in comparision to MrPinski's Guy-Man
5)Resin the whole lid and let dry.
    6) Fiberglass the innerds for strength and durability.
    7) CURRENTLY Bondo'ing everything on the outside and make mirrior finish smooth.

    Materials used- (For pepping)
    Cardstock
    Pens
    Scissors
Resin (pictured below, can be bought at home improvement DYI stores, and Walmart.)
Fiberglass (pictured below, also available at DYI and Walmart stores.)
    One time use brushes
    Plastic red solo cups
    Latex gloves
Respirator (Pay for a good one!)
Dungbeetle's Pepakura File for Thomas Bangalter's lid
    (Here-http://www.printablearmory.com/product.php?id_product=55)

So after getting the required cardstock, armed with scissors, blue and red pens with elmers glue all I went to work.

    All the prints.

    At first it went SLOWLY.

Taped on for the first test fit, with the original idea of attaching just a pep'd visor to skateboard helmet. It seemed off, and small.

    Time to add the Resin.

    After application.

    Drying.

Comparative to my ATA TK Lid.

Since I didn't like the size of the skateboard helmet, I pep'd the rest of the original Dungbeetle file. I still was unhappy.

Compared to MrPinski's EXCELLENT Guy-Man, my V1 Thomas frankenpep was too large.

I reduced it by 10% and then by a stroke of Digital love it was the perfect size I needed. Also, the skateboard lid fits nice and snug inside, providing support, and comfort.

    Much, much better with V2.

V2 compared to MrPinski's Guy-Man, they look like a pair!

    MrPinski's Guy-Man, V2, and V1.

    V2 Resin'd.

    Fiberglassing the inside of V2.

All dry with visor cut out. (Very dumb on my part because now I need to find that, or make a pep'd visor if I ever want to cast this when by the digital gods it is done...)

First bondo lessons, and first smoothing. There will be ALOT of smoothing and whatever tips you all have for getting a nice well rounded lid LEMME know ASAP. I have a mouse sander, and tons of sand paper of varying grits. I will make a list when I get home next weekend.

Sorry for poor picture, this was last fall, but this is the current state of the lid.

Guy-Man pictures to come later today.

Re: My first Bucket - Thomas w/Guy in progress!

    Hi and welcome,

    About your questions....

    1-Yes.
2-Not sure what exactly most builders use;I usually make them with PETG .40 thickness and the tint them with something like this... http://www.ebay.com/itm/120417922480...9#ht_500wt_899
    3-I sell decals.
4-I have different technics to do it as I build the HAA which visor is attached on the chassis of the helmet and TRON era it's attached from inside. I like your idea of using velcro tho.
