DAFT PUNK RETURNS WITH "RANDOM ACCESS MEMORIES"

"Random Access Memories" by Daft Punk

"Random Access Memories" gathers together 13 tracks. For Obsession.fr, Daft Punk, aka Thomas Bagalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, evoke each of these tracks, before the album release, on May 20.

By Joseph Ghosn and Olivier Wicker

    -----
    Give Life Back to Music
    -----
"One of the ambition of this record is to bring not only something light but also something elegant. Here, John Robinson Jr is playing the drums. He was present on "Off The Wall", Mickael Jackson's album. What is fantastic about a performance like his, is the infinity of possible shades : something we were not used to with electronic programming… Records produced by Quincy Jones have always fascinated us by their ultimate precision which has never been affected by any technologies what so ever. It's like the fundamental difference between "Thriller" and "Bad". In the latter, the tracks are really high quality, but the performances are less differentiating."

    ----
    The Game of Love
    ----
"We sing with vocoders. At a time when human voices get edited to become robotic, we found fascinating to make robotic voices sound the best humanly possible. The idea of an artificial intelligence that gets close to humans. An emotion of something that is not human but that attempts to become one."

    ----
    Giorgio by Moroder
    ----
"We met him several years ago ; he has always been for us some sort of mythical character, a bit mysterious. His personal route follows music's. It came to us the idea of a somehow documentary track based on an interview that we directed. Giorgio Moroder has been recorded with several microphones from several different times… So we finally recorded an about three-hour long interview where he tells his life as a musician. This track is a metaphor of musical freedom : we always forced us to break the barriers between musical genres, between good and bad tastes, trendy stuff and non-trendy stuff. Giorgio is an excellent example of its type. He was born in a small provincial town, started music in hotels lounges, did the opening of Johnny Hallyday (famous french singer ndlr.), began to make progressive rock stuffs. Hearing him saying, at 72, "ah, I've done some electronic music 40 years ago", is fascinating"

    ----
    Within
    ----
"Gonzales plays the piano on this piece. He is a friend and a great pianist, one of the greatest musician of his generation. "Within" is one of the first pieces we have recorded. It is really minimal : some rhythmic section, one bass, a piano. Making the most with very little, that's the idea behind this track."

    ----
    Instant Crush
    ----
"Julian Casablancas from the Strokes sings it. We are both huge fans and we have heard that he wanted to meet us. We had this demo hanging around, he came, he listened and he was nuts! He has some kind of gift. We initially love rock and the rock band concept, there were so many strong things that the emergence of a new voice at a given time became something difficult.
Lately, The Strokes and MGMT - with different dimensions and different sensibilities - managed to do it. Julian has a punk rock side, a very high emotional impact in melodies. It was important to have him on the album, to feel surrounded by our contemporaries."

    ----
    Lose Yourself to Dance
    ----
"This piece is the simplest definition of our wishes : an album very well polished and very simple at the same time, with a bass, drums, guitar main line - and the robots! It is the opposite of an over-production. Our fantasy, it's to make dance music with drums again… Recording it that way brought us an enormous satisfaction. There are two drummers on the album : John Robinson Jr, who has got the most recorded drummer record, and Omer Hakim, who started with Stevie Wonder at 16...

    ----
    Touch
    ----
"This piece is the node of the album. It is the start of the whole record beginning with Paul Williams encounter. A sound engineer we know introduced him to us. Paul Williams [film soundtrack composer, in particular in "Phantom of the Paradise" and actor] visited us in a studio. From this encounter something really cinematographic, really narrative, was born. "Touch" well defines the psychedelic aspect of "Random Access Memories". This piece includes 250 tracks, so it is the most complex, the craziest."

    ----
    Get Lucky
    ----
"Pharell Williams sings on this piece : it was natural to invite him on our album. He is born performer, complete, and give off a lot of elegance. He has never really had the opportunity to show how an excellent singer he is, whereas we can easily add him to the mythical performers pantheon. There is no imaginary line existing that would separate great artists from the past from the present's who would be not as good as before. We wanted to give the feeling of being in a time capsule, in a studio, cut from the world. You could feel being in 1978, but our idea was to make this music travel in the past and in the future, see what happens and observe how communicative the enthusiasm is."

    ----
    Beyond
    ----
"An other piece done with Paul Williams who wrote the lyrics. It is a hyper cosmical song with very poetic and pure lyrics. We discussed a lot about the direction of the record with Paul Williams, and it is interesting that he is able to put words on our ideas"

    ----
    Motherboard
    ----
"A futuristic piece, which could be from year 4000…"

    ----
    Fragments of Time
    ----
"Our reunion with Todd Edwards (house composer) after "Discovery"."

    ----
    Doin' it Right
    ----
"Panda Bear (from Animal Collective band) 's angelic voice. We love what he does solo, as much as its band approach. This piece - the only electronic one of the album - was the lastest recorded. It results some sort of laid-back attitude. Probably the most futuristic and contemporary piece."

    ----
    Contact
    ----
"A piece made with DJ Falcon and a voice recorded during the last Apollo 17 NASA mission : captain Eugene Cernan's, the last man that have been on the Moon. It's a voice literally coming from out of space. And what it tells doesn't require any comment..."

Thank you! But you missed one track! You have the text for Touch under Loose Yourself to Dance, so the actual LYtD text is gone.

Thanks for that. I tried to combine a google translate with some French for the strange parts, but a lot still needed clearing up.
