"Beyond" is to Daft Punk What "Human Nature" Is To Michael Jackson

Arguably the best ballad they've ever composed. I'm glad my favorite RAM track got a single release (Instant Crush), but Beyond is definitely a highlight as well. Mostly thanks to Williams' beautiful lyrics, and the most soothing arrangement the duo have ever achieved. Just my 2 cents.

Do you mean Touch? Because I didn't know Paul Williams wrote the lyrics for Beyond.

Yes, he means beyond and yes he wrote the lyrics...

Someone please start a thread for Touch.

    This song is about heaven.

Re: "Beyond" is to Daft Punk What "Human Nature" Is To Michael Jackson

I really liked Beyond, but I think I may fall in the minority here (especially in this thread) in not being a huge fan of this song. I think that the sounds of the two songs are so similar that it's very hard to deny their comparability.

But, it's such a statement to even compare the two songs. Human Nature is such a giant of a song that Beyond, in my opinion, can only really be an homage to Human Nature and can't really be a side-by-side comparison for that reason. I love both the songs, don't get me wrong, and I'm not trying to start an argument. I DO think that Beyond was meant from start to finish to be an homage to Human Nature.

Conversely, I think that this album is both an homage to the great albums and a contender to be one of the great albums itself. I hear Michael Jackson in Get Lucky, Beyond, and Lose Yourself to Dance. I hear Bowie and Elton in Touch. I hear The Cars in Instant Crush.

I think "Random Access Memories" is to Daft Punk what "Thriller" is to Michael Jackson.

Easily the best of the three "sad robot songs" (as I call them) on the album, and the only one that I think could hold its own against "Something About Us" in a fight - or, more befitting the mood of the songs, perhaps a really intense group therapy session. You're right about Paul Williams being the seeing the secret hero of this track; as much as I enjoy DP's lyrics elsewhere I wish they could have given some more of those responsibilities to him on this album. Honestly there are times when I consider this my favorite RAM track - and if that intro doesn't find its way into their next live set I'm gonna have to speak to the two of them in private.

^ how is it sad? Has a bit more of a mellow vibe yes but I don't find it heartbreaking or anything...

One of the best aspects about the track are the ambiguous lyrics. It could have many meanings. The most prominently agreed theme being discussed, however, is the spiritual one. Religious or otherwise. Williams' interview for RAM also lends to the legitimacy of this hypothesis. Being thankful to still be alive after so much alcoholic/drug abuse, being thankful of the relativity and accomplishments, given his age... etc.

And I'm just going to leave this lovely cover here:
