RAM vocoder: Sennheiser VSM 201
4th Apr 2015, 22:50 #1Guys/Gals over at Gearslutz figured this out a while ago.
The vocoder used on RAM was the Sennheiser VSM 201:
One person claimed it was the main vocoder they use, and that it is the most expensive vocoder ever made. Kraftwerk used it.
Time to save up.

6th Apr 2015, 13:25 #3You can get similar results with the vocoder they used in HAA:

I'm sure you can get even closer to it when you tweak the carrier long enough. The sound of the Sennheiser is a bit softer though. It also does modulation based on if the input signal is speech or singing, which the other one doesn't.

6th Apr 2015, 21:51 #4I really like this, the sound is very similar to my ears. Exactly what vocoder did you use? I'm in the market for one and obviously being a daft fan I want to be able to emulate them at times

I think you can find it for relatively cheap on ebay. It is far from the price of the VSM 201.

13th Apr 2015, 23:04 #9Yea a very nice synth, though somewhat limited. To be fairly honest the vocoder on the microkorg isn't that bad too, I do use a different mic. You could also go for the MS2000, JP8080 should also have a nice vocoder (though I never heard it) or a bit expensive maybe, the VC10 or VP330. What synth are you looking for now?

Re: RAM vocoder: Sennheiser VSM 201
14th Apr 2015, 00:30 #10It's not actually a synth; its the Roland Juno-Gi, which has a vocoder in it. I'm not getting it solely because of the vocoder, though.
The best one I've heard hardware-wise is the Sennheiser, though. Software would have to go to the Vocodex. I don't like vocoders in which you can't tell what is being said.
