This Should've Been Disclosed
3rd Mar 2017, 10:52 #1How bad is the situation with keeping the servers up? I'm assuming other lurkers and users, who aren't supporters, are getting the pop-up ads I got while lurking. Some were even explicit in content.
I feel bad that it's come to this, but it's been made worse by keeping the initiative under wraps. I dunno if these pop-ups have been on here for awhile. I just started getting them today.

3rd Mar 2017, 11:57 #2Are these pop up ads opening in new windows, or are they in the first post of every thread? If they're in the threads, that's normal, it's been that way ever since the forum moved from the old hosting service. You're not supposed to see them if you're a supporter.
I haven't had any pop up windows in any situation (supporter, non-supporter, or logged out as a guest.) If they're explicit in content, you might want to run Malwarebytes or something just to make sure you don't have anything bad on your computer. I've had that happen sometimes where I've gone to an infected website without knowing it and all of a sudden there are ads for porn websites or something popping up on my desktop because of a nasty bug (easily remedied though.)

3rd Mar 2017, 17:31 #3When I entered the site I got a pop-up for Audible.com, when I went to Log in I got another pop-up for Audible, when I started typing this message I got a pop-up saying something wanted to open in another app and new windows keep opening to a fake Talk-talk survey, atleast I'm guessing it's fake because Talk-talk aren't my internet provider.
I'm on my phone at the moment so I'm not sure what this is like on a desktop.

3rd Mar 2017, 17:40 #4They're pop-up ads in new windows, opening whenever as I'm clicking on subforums or a thread title while I'm lurking. The majority of the pop-ups are Forex~ish type bullcrap with narration built in.
Everything goes back to normal when I'm signed in. Probably because I'm a supporter. And I can't explain what it's like for non-supporters, because I've been one ever since I came back from my hiatus around RAM's first teasers. Ergo, it must be some new ad space encoded onto the website.

3rd Mar 2017, 21:33 #5That's weird that this only started happening recently. Not sure if it's Spud's doing (I kind of doubt it,) but it sounds like it might be something the service provider that is hosting the forum has done to change their ads. Either that or the security of the forum has been compromised and we've got these pop ups as a result.
I recently started donating again and I'm not seeing any pop up windows either. But I've been logged out a couple of times (after cleaning off cookies) and haven't seen them then either. I'd recommend staying logged in all the time or, depending on what type of browser you're using (I use Firefox) consider installing some kind of ad blocker. I know ad blockers are frowned upon here because they block the ad revenue that Spud gets to keep the site up, but if the ads are becoming invasive and ruining the experience, I wouldn't blame anyone for doing it. Some of those pop ups come with spyware and other junk that can harm your computer, too.

4th Mar 2017, 00:15 #7Not a supporter yet, but I have not seen these. Definitely weird. I'll pass this on.
As ifcwdjd said, it'd be a good idea to run Malwarebytes on your machine as a precaution.Last edited by CherieD'Amoure; 4th Mar 2017 at 00:18.

4th Mar 2017, 05:00 #8i have never gotten any type of pop-ups from tdc signed in or signed out. is tdc the only tabs you have open at the time? as ifc mentions it could also be from previously visited tabs of other sites lingering in your system.

4th Mar 2017, 08:41 #10I ran a scan with MalwareBytes and no threats were detected. The issue is only present when I'm browsing TDC. It goes away after five clicks.
It's the website. Period. Have a gander at it if you want. Though I have a feeling I'll keep getting this "It's your fault" vibe until someone else confirms it lol. Suit yourselves.
