Not me, I've watched it on Google video in the past Hell I almost forgot that used to exist. I recommend getting it on DVD/Bluray though

Hmm... I don't personally think that it's a "Japanese" thing that the main character dies to save others, it's just common to Leiji Matsumoto's films, comics, TV series, etc.

Just to clarify things, Daft Punk discovered (accidental pun) Leiji Matsumoto through watching Arcadia of My Youth (a show based off one of Matsumoto's comics but run in multiple languages) when they were kids.

Also, Matsumoto seems to only have like 3 or 4 different models for all of his characters. For example, compare Wildstar to Harlock to Arpegius. Their models are very similar. The same statement can be applied for Maetel, Emeraldas, and Stella.

So it wasn't exactly "previous projects" that inspired the characters from Interstella 5555. It was instead Matsumoto's art style and character models which he had always used (and still continues to use up to this day) that were the influence.
(Although, I'm not too sure about Octave's character model... As a Leijiverse fan I haven't really noticed any other character who looks similar to him...)

Judging by the wording of the post you quoted, I wouldn't waste my breath explaining who Leiji is and his work(s). Guy didn't care as much as to say he's Japanese. Meaning, I don't think he actually cares about the details.

I'm a Manga freak myself, and that's how I got deep knowledge of its history and Matsumoto's works especially. But getting to the level I am now required years of reading series and researching the Mangakas behind it. Ergo, unless somebody with a hint of this curiosity gives it away in his posts, don't bother clarifying to those who (obviously) seem not to care.

On a side note, about them growing up on Harlock, I myself watched the Greek dub of the Anime as a 3 or 4-year-old. And I had no clue it was based on a Manga until years later.

Wish I could ask them what they think of Grendizer.
